REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 <br />TITLE: <br />RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING <br />PARTICIPATION IN THE CALIFORNIA <br />STATE PARKS HABITAT CONSERVATION <br />FUND GRANT PROGRAM <br />:' ~ ~ <br />CITY MANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />APPROVED <br />^ As Recommended <br />^ As Amended <br />^ Ordinance on 1St Reading <br />^ Ordinance on 2"d Reading <br />^ Implementing Resolution <br />^ Set Public Hearing For_ <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Adopt a resolution authorizing the submittal of a grant application in <br />the amount of $75,000 to the California State Parks Habitat Conservation <br />Fund Program for the Santiago Creek Butterfly and Bird Habitat Project. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The Habitat Conservation Fund Program was established under the <br />California Wildlife Protection Act of 1990 and provides grant funds for <br />the enhancement, restoration and interpretation of riparian habitats <br />throughout the State. Approximately $2 million will be available this <br />funding cycle. The grant application requires a 50-percent match of non- <br />State money, which is available in the City's park acquisition and <br />development fund. Applications are due on October 1, 2008. <br />The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency proposes to submit an <br />application for the Santiago Creek Butterfly and Bird Habitat. The <br />habitat will be located at the southern edge of Fisher Park adjacent to <br />the Santiago Creek bed. The project is an effort to create and maintain <br />a thriving natural habitat that will attract rare and endangered <br />butterfly and bird species.
