Description of Work - In the space below, describe the program to be funded during the 12 -month contract period. <br />What specific activities will be undertaken during the contract period. Please be concise in your response. Only the <br />riewable space will prim. <br />The After School Learning Center serves 60 low-income Santa Ana students in grades 1 through 6 and provides <br />comprehensive academic/tutoring and art education services. All of the children face economic hardship (i.e., low <br />income) and social risk factors (e.g.. low academic skill levels). Participants are ages 6 - 14, and 99% describe <br />themselves as Hispanic/Latino. The curriculum is aligned with California Department of Education content <br />standards for the arts, language arts, and social sciences, and includes: <br />• Creative writing and storytelling projects developed around exhibitions or individual artworks build written <br />communication skills, literacy skills, and listening and verbal skills. <br />• Art classes and instructors introduce students to a variety of visual and performing arts to increase students' oral <br />language/communication skills, self-confidence, hand -eye coordination, and cultural awareness. <br />• The computer lab and classes enhance students' technological skills, help them complete research and school <br />assignments, and prepare them to participate in Bridges to Understanding, a program for middle school students <br />that connects students with their contemporaries in various global communities, (e.g., India, Nepal, Kenya). <br />Students utilize digital storytelling, oral narration, photography, and video to share cultural experiences with their <br />global peers. <br />• Family recitals feature art created by the students and light refreshments for children and families. Additionally, <br />parents participate in monthly education events that feature speakers who address topics such as family literacy <br />and college preparedness. <br />• Academic support services involve input from students' teachers, who are asked to provide information about <br />each student's individual strengths and academic needs. The program staff uses this information to help students <br />to complete their homework and provide one-to-one tutoring, when needed. <br />Schedule of Performace <br />Estimate the number of ONLY unduplicated Santa An residents to be served by the funded program during the ry <br />month contract period per quarter.
