1C7. LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
Best Management Practices {BMPs)
~t BMP is a technique, measure or structural control that is
used for a given set of conditions to improve the quality of
the stormwater runoff in a cost effective manner'. The
minimum required BP,RPs forthis activity are outlined in the
box to the right. implementation of pollution
preventianlgood housekeeping measures may reduce ar
eliminate the need to implement other more costly or
complicated procedures. Proper employee training is key
to the su cress of BMP impiementatian.
he BPwtPs outlined in this fact sheet target the following
oolfutants:
Tar eted Constituents
~
aedirrteftt _ X
Nutrients x
Floa"table Materials X
Metals
Bacteria X
C?i] & Grease
rJr antes & Taxiaants
.~'estiCide9 X
~x en Demandin X
MINIMUM BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
~Pellution Prerention`~aod Hauseke~pina
• Properly stare and disease a# gardening wastes.
• Use much or other erasion dart==al measures on
exposed soi€s.
• Properly manage irrigation arrd runof€.
Properly s#are and aispose of chemica€s.
• Proper€y manage pesticide and herbicide use.
• Properly manage'•erti9izerusc.
Stencil storm drains
Trainin
• Train employees on these BMPs, storm +.~+tater
discharge prohibitions, and wastewater discharge
requirements.
• Provide an-going employee training in pollution
prevention.
Provided belovr are specific procedures associated with each ofihe minimum BMPs along with procedures fdr
additional Bf~2Ps that should be considered if this activity takes place at a facility ?orated near a sensitive
waterbody. In order to meet the requirements for medium and high priority facilities, the ownersfoperators must
select, install and maintain appropriate BrvtPs on site. Since the selection of the appropriate BMPs is asite-
specific process, the types and numbers of additional BMPs will vary for each facility.
1. Take steps to reduce landscape maintenance requirements.
• UUhere feasible, retain andi`or plant native vegetation with features that are determined to be
beneficial. Native vegetation usually requires Tess maintenance than planting new vegetation.
• ~"Jhen planting or replanting consider using law water use flowers, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers.
• Consider alternative landscaping techniques such as naturescaping and xeriscaping.
2. Properly stare and dispose of gardening wastes.
• Dispose of grass clippings, leaves, sticks, ar other collected vegetation as garbage at a permitted
landfill or by composting.
• Do not dispose of gardening wastes in streets, waterways, air storm drainage systems.
• Place temporarily stockpiled material away from watercourses and storm drain inlets, and berm
and(or cover.
3.
