REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />JANUARY 5, 2009 <br />TITLE: <br />APPROPRIATION ADJUSTMENT <br />RECOGNIZING HABITAT CONSERVATION <br />FUND PROGRAM GRANT AWARD FOR THE <br />SANTIAGO PARK NATURE RESERVE <br />WILDERNESS RESOURCES PROGRAM <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />APPROVED <br />^ As Recommended <br />^ As Amended <br />^ Ordinance on 1S` Reading <br />^ Ordinance on 2"d Reading <br />^ Implementing Resolution <br />^ Set Public Hearing For_ <br />CONTINUED TO <br />'sy`~ ~ FILE NUMBER <br />CITY ANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Approve an appropriation adjustment recognizing $100,000 in the Habitat <br />Cons-Santiago Nature revenue account (no. 161-O1-5378) and appropriating <br />same to the Habitat Conservation Fund expenditure account (no. 161-268- <br />various) for the Santiago Park Nature Reserve Wilderness Resources <br />Connection and Protection Education Program. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The City of Santa Ana Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency was <br />successful in receiving a $100,000 Habitat Conservation Fund Program grant <br />from the California Department of Parks and Recreation for the Santiago <br />Park Nature Reserve Wilderness Resources Connection and Protection <br />Education Program. The project will introduce Santa Ana youth to <br />wilderness resources, emphasize the important benefits those services <br />provide, and will educate residents on how best to visit, protect and <br />restore wilderness resources both locally and regionally. The program <br />will be conducted from the newly constructed Santiago Creek Wildlife and <br />Watershed Center and will include field trips and group presentations that <br />focus on plant and animal identification, habitat restoration techniques, <br />wilderness ethics, and camping and outdoor skills. The City will use in- <br />kind personnel costs to meet the 50 percent matching funds requirement. <br />20B-1 <br />
