GRANTS MADE EASY -DUI
Overtime
SCHEDULE A
GRANT No: AL0963
GRANT DESCRIPTION Page 1
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Using local data (not OTS Rankings or SWITRS), complete the table below.
Collision T e 2004 20 05 20 06
Collisions Victims Collisions Victims Collisions Victims
Fatal 12 13 23 23 20 20
Injury 1530 21 55 1521 21 80 1391 1985
Fatal In'u Killed Inured Fatal In'u Kilted Inured Fatal In'u Killed Inured
Alcohol Involved 4 122 5 166 6 122 6 186 6 100 6 140
Hit & Run 4 272 4 362 1 280 1 354 5 231 5 303
Nighttime 3 202 3 274 8 199 8 288 8 163 8 234
(2100-0259 hours)
Please provide detailed answers to the following questions as part of the Problem Statement:
1. Describe the traffic safety problem(s) to be addressed, include:
• What percent of your collisions involve drivers with suspended or revoked license or drivers who have
never been issued a license?
• What percent of your total DUI arrests between October 1, 2006, and September 30, 2007, were made as
a result of a collision?
In the city of Santa Ana we responded to and prepared reports for 4,405 collisions during the specified
time period. Of these reported collisions, 1911 were hit and run collisions. Because one or more parties left
the scene there license status is unknown. We recorded a total of 1583 collisions where one or more of the
parties were unlicensed either suspended or none issued. This represents 36% of our total reported
collisions. If we exclude hit & run traffic collisions where the license status is unknown from our total
number of collisions, there is a 63% chance the driver is unlicensed.
The Santa Ana Police Department arrested a total of 867 DUI drivers during the specified period. We
arrested 370 of these impaired drivers after they had become involved in a traffic collision. This represents
43% of all our DUI arrests.
As can be seen, the City of Santa Ana has significant challenges to face in regards to unlicensed drivers,
hit & run collisions, and DUI enformcent. We have dedicated significant resources to address these
problems by dedicating officers to specifically target unlicensed drivers, and DUI drivers. We have funded
these efforts using Grant funds in addition to using funds gathered by means of vehicle release fees
2. How many sobriety checkpoints did your department conduct between October 1, 2006 and
September 30, 2007? (Include checkpoints from all funding sources, i.e. OTS grants or mini-grants, and
department funded)
OTS-38b DUI Overtime
(12/06)
