accordance with their normal growth characteristics. `Box hedging" may be <br />required on some shrubs, as set designated by the Director. Shear hedging or <br />severe pruning/trimming of plants, unless authorized by the Director, is not <br />permitted. Topping of plants whose natural growth stems from the base of the <br />plant is not permitted. Should the Contractor top, shear hedge or severely prune <br />plants and disfigure or damage the plants, the Contractor shall be responsible <br />for replacing those plants with like kind and size as and subject to approval by <br />the Director. <br />The Contractor may be requested from time to time to raise the bottom of the <br />shrubs for security reasons. <br />b) Replanting <br />The Contractor shall plant each year, in any area determined by the Director, 1 <br />gallon standard shrubs at an appropriate spacing so as to achieve complete <br />coverage once the pla~~~t is 2/3rds mature. The Contractor shall also be <br />responsible for the complete removal and replacement of plants lost due to <br />normal attrition or due to Contractor's failure to perform under the terms of this <br />Agreement. City is responsible for cost of replacing plants lost to vandalism; <br />however, Contractor must prove that it was vandalism that killed the plant See <br />Attachment 7 for plant cap. <br />c) Mulching of Bare Areas <br />In all shrub areas where bare soil is visible or where the shrub is thin so the soil <br />is visible, the Contractor shall apply an approved mulch, size 0" to 1 '/z", Yz" <br />thick minimum every other month starting in January during the third week as <br />necessary to maintain uniform and complete coverage. Mulch is to be <br />maintained within its boundaries. <br />d) Fertilization <br />The Contractor shall fertilize all shrub areas four (4) times per year in March, <br />June, September, and December using JTM Nutrients Complete 8-2-4 soil <br />conditioner plus NPK slow release fertilizer at a rate of eight (8) pounds of <br />actual nitrogen per ],000 square feet. <br />Tree Care <br />a) Height/Quality of Pruning <br />In July and August of each year the Contractor shall routinely Class 1 prune all <br />trees up to a height of fifteen (15) feet. All trees within the scope of work shall <br />be maintained to keep the natural integrity and shapes of the trees. Pruning shall <br />be accomplished in a manner that will ensure that each individual tree is Class I <br />pruned as set forth in the City of Santa Ana Tree Pruning/trimming and Stump <br />Removal Specifications (see Attachment 9). In addition, the Director may <br />require the Contractor to remove or prevent encroachment of trees into the <br />~9 <br />25C-111 <br />
