REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />JUNE 1, 2009 <br />TITLE: <br />APPROPRIATION ADJUSTMENT <br />RECOGNIZING METROPOLITAN <br />WATER DISTRICT PUBLIC SECTOR <br />PROGRAM GRANT FUNDING <br />CITY MANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />APPROVED <br />As Recommended <br />As Amended <br />Ordinance on 1s' Reading <br />Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />Implementing Resolution <br />Set Public Hearing For_ <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Approve an appropriation adjustment recognizing $27,462.50 in Metropolitan <br />Water District (MWD) Public Sector Program revenue account (nos. 169 -01- <br />5382) and appropriate same to the MWD Public Sector Program expenditure <br />accounts (nos. 169 - 578 - 6391). <br />DISCUSSION <br />The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency received $27,462.50 in <br />grant funding from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) Public Sector <br />Program to improve water conservation efforts in the downtown Civic Center. <br />The funding will be used to improve the Park Service's centralized <br />irrigation management system. Twenty -eight old irrigation control units <br />will be retrofitted with Calsense centralized water conservation control <br />units. <br />These computerized control units utilize local weather data to adjust daily <br />irrigation programs to maximize water conservation. In addition, the <br />computerized control units recognize when an irrigation system malfunction <br />occurs and automatically shuts down the specific portion of the system, <br />thereby preventing loss of valuable water, until the malfunction can be <br />remedied. Each computerized control unit is networked to the Park Service's <br />central computer located in the City Yard Park Services Headquarter Office. <br />From there the Park Service's Utility Coordinator can monitor the systems <br />use of water and make appropriate adjustments to the computerized control <br />units to further maximize water conservation. <br />20A -1 <br />
