Evaluation materials developed for the Success Bound! program will be designed to elicit participant <br />opinions concerning both the effectiveness and the appropriateness of the program vis-a-vis their <br />needs and the degree to which the project's activities helped them graduate and pursue an occupational <br />career while also entering a higher education program. As with any useful and valid evaluation <br />instrument, the data from these initial participant reviews will be incorporated into program <br />modifications if necessary to better meet participant needs. <br />Continuing Education <br />ELEMENT #2: Provision of access to appropriate alternative secondary school services if <br />needed to facilitate graduation on schedule. <br />The Success Bound! program staff will carefully monitor each participant's progress toward the <br />attainment of both their basic academics, work readiness & occupational skill attainment goals and <br />their high school diploma. When necessary, participants will be directed to alternative programs both <br />within the Santa Ana schools and at other agencies in order to acquire the need units/classes needed to <br />meet their diploma requirements. These alternative programs will include the District's Independent <br />Study and Teen Parent programs, Santa Ana College's Adult Education Programs and the Orange <br />County Department of Education's two alternative programs; Horizon and Summit. The high school <br />guidance counselors and Rosa Galindo at the District's Student Services Office will assist program <br />staff in the enrollment of participants in alternative programs. <br />Placement in alternative educational settings for the purpose of facilitating placement and retention in <br />a post secondary educational setting will also be a key element of this aspect of the Success Bound! <br />program. Individual needs will be assessed and documented through the normal secondary school <br />delivery system and follow-up by staff. Depending on the needs, several options will be available for <br />the students: tutoring, practice tests and preparation for college entrance exams, proficiency test <br />practices, etc. Individual help from staff, adult mentors and others will ensure the success of the <br />students. Grades and attendance will be monitored by the Success Bound! Community Resource <br />Specialist. If additional intervention is necessary, the appropriate staff person will be notified of the <br />needs of the student. <br />Placement in Jobs <br />ELEMENT #4: Opportunity for each participant to participate in paid and/or unpaid <br />internships or work experiences. <br />This successful element of the current 2007/08 WIA program is a modification a previous JTPA <br />program between the Santa Ana Unified School District and the Private Industry Council of Santa <br />Ana. That program, the "School -Workplace Internship Program," served high school participants who <br />attend Santa Ana high schools and/or Regional Occupational Program (ROP) classes. As with the <br />previous program, Success Bound! participants in 2008/09 will be given the opportunity for both paid <br />or non -paid internship (work experience) opportunities that offer: <br />viable paid workplace internships which provide appropriate work -based learning <br />opportunities; <br />improved career related curricula and instructional strategies allied with the <br />UROG "Choosing Success" materials or other similar connecting activities; <br />strengthened comprehensive local community partnerships; and, <br />=> improved non-traditional employment opportunities for WIA eligible students. <br />18 <br />
