Approve an appropriation adjustment recognizing $626,767 in the Federal Grant-Direct <br /> revenue account (no.15311002 52000) and appropriating same to the Federal Grant-Direct <br /> expenditure account (no. 15311156 various). <br /> 2. Authorize the City Manager to take all actions necessary to accept the Federal Institute of <br /> Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Laura Bush 21St Century Opportunity Program grant in <br /> the amount of $626,767 to fund the Seeds to Trees program. <br /> DISCUSSION <br /> The Santa Ana Public Library was awarded a Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services <br /> (IMLS) grant in the amount of $626,767 as part of the agency's Laura Bush 21St Century Librarian <br /> Program. The grant will fund the three-year project, "Seeds to Trees: Growing the Librarians of <br /> Tomorrow from High Schoo/ Oip/oma to ML/S with the Santa Ana Pub/ic Library and Orange County <br /> Reforma'; which will provide Santa Ana teens and young adults with part-time employment and <br /> career development opportunities in the Library. The long term goal of the program is to offer these <br /> <br /> young people an opportunity to learn about libraries and the library profession and to pursue <br /> successful careers as librarians. In addition, the project will create a guide for future use that can <br /> serve as a teaching tool for libraries seeking to develop and train librarians who speak the languages <br /> and share the cultural backgrounds of their communities. <br /> The grant will pay the part-time salaries of approximately 30 staff per year to serve as library <br /> management interns, library clerks, and library pages. In addition, the grant will provide funding to <br /> support Reforma in creating semiannual career workshops for these employees and other interested <br /> students recruited by the library from local high schools. Reforma is a national organization for <br /> Hispanic library professionals that promotes career development and programs for Spanish-speaking <br /> library patrons. The grant will also provide tuition reimbursement for students in Library Science <br /> Masters programs, memberships in professional organizations, and travel to Reforma and American <br /> Library Association national events- The Library will use in-kind personnel costs to provide the <br /> required grant match. <br /> 20B-1 <br /> <br />
