Min ter St. Modem Apartment ca. 1978 N. C. <br />Topped with a mansard roof, the two-story ell-shaped apartment <br />building at 821 N. Minter is clad in rough stucco, accented with half <br />timbers. Built about 1978, the building has garages on the first floor of <br />the rear ell and a wrought iron balcony along the front of the second floor <br />rear ell. <br />831-35 N. Minter St. Wright Apartments Craftsman 1919 <br />The two-story Wright Apartment building, located on the southeast <br />corner of Minter and Vance Streets, features an imposing two-story fuil- <br />width porch. Wood shingles cover the top half of the exterior, while wide <br />clapboards cover the lower half of the facade. The medium-pitched side- <br />facing gabled roof is accented by trios of carved beam ends and exposed <br />rafter tails. An arched opening, flanked by rectangular shaped openings, is <br />centered in the full front porch on the second floor. Below, the first floor <br />porch is supported by square brick-clad pillars topped with concrete caps. <br />A dramatic gabled portico accented with triangular knee braces, exposed <br />beam ends, and a cross beam, crowns the main entrance. A slanted bay <br />window, topped with a gabled roof, is located in the center of the north <br />side, facing Vance Street. <br />The Wright Apartments, already listed on the National Register, <br />were constructed in 1919 by George and Emma Wright. The Wrights <br />played a prominent role* in the formation of the French Park neighborhood. <br />Moving to Santa Ana in December of 1885, they built a house on the site <br />of what is now French Park. That house was later moved to this lot after <br />the park was purchased by the neighbors and dedicated to the city. In <br />1919 the Wrights demolished the earlier house and built this two-story, <br />three-apartment building. They lived in the spacious first floor apartment <br />and rented the two upstairs apartments to various tenants. Mr. Wright, <br />who went into the transfer business in 1899, built the warehouse <br />immediately to the east of the apartment building, also in 1919. He was a <br />member of the Oddfellows, the Woodmen of the World, the Chamber of <br />Commerce, and the influential Sunset Club. <br />■v-' <br />  <br />    <br />
