Deputy Police Chief Roland Andrade reported a total of 34 fatalities and 29 <br /> collisions in 2025 and five fatal collisions this year regarding pedestrian and vehicle <br /> fatality rates. <br /> Acting Public Works Director Rodolfo Rosas stated the requested item is identified <br /> in the City's Vision Zero Plan, including new projects aimed at improving <br /> intersections and staff could report back within 90 days with a comprehensive <br /> update on intersection safety and proposed improvements. <br /> Councilmember Bacerra voiced concerns regarding a comprehensive report due to <br /> the Vision Zero Plan being active and inquired regarding the movement of loop <br /> detectors within crosswalks and traffic signals. <br /> Acting Director Rosas explained a majority of traffic signals need to be updated with <br /> loop detector technology and movement of loops would improve safety at <br /> intersections. <br /> Mayor Amezcua inquired whether the Police Department had received laptops to <br /> assist traffic officers to regulate speeding and, if so, when would they be <br /> implemented, and emphasized the need for more traffic officers and glow-in-the- <br /> dark stop signs for public safety regarding speeding and racing within the City. <br /> Deputy Chief Andrade stated the department received approval for laptops and <br /> explained how the department restructured their traffic division to improve traffic <br /> related collisions implemented by Police Chief Robert Rodriguez. <br /> City Manager Alvaro Nunez further elaborated on Deputy Chief Andrade's <br /> comments. <br /> Councilmember Lopez expressed the importance of public safety regarding the <br /> item. <br /> RECESS <br /> MINUTES: Mayor Amezcua recessed the City Council meeting to convene the <br /> Housing Authority meeting at 9:01 P.M. <br /> RECONVENE <br /> MINUTES: Mayor Amezcua reconvened the City Council meeting at 9:03 P.M. <br /> CITY MANAGER COMMENTS <br /> MINUTES: City Manager Alvaro Nunez announced the Parks and Recreation hiring fairs for <br /> seasonal positions on March 19, 2026 and April 9, 2026 at Jerome Recreation Center, the <br /> OC United Way tax preparation event at the Santa Ana Work Center on March 20, 2026, the <br /> Santa Ana and Sauyaho Business Expo on March 27-29, 2026, the Apprenticeship Career <br /> Fair on April 3, 2026, the Centennial Park park improvements ribbon-cutting on April 4, 2026, <br /> CITY COUNCIL 16 MARCH 17, 2026 <br />
