OCDA Personnel:Toth, Thomas 366 <br />Involvement:Reporting 4/19/2023 <br />On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at approximately 01:20 hours, Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) Detective RENE <br />BONILLA, SAPD Sergeant JORGE LOPEZ and I conducted a digital audio-recorded interview with Registered <br />Nurse (RN) , regarding the officer-involved shooting (OIS) of MARVIN MELGAREJO involving <br />SAPD. The interview took place in the Emergency Department of Orange County Global Medical Center (OCGMC), <br />located at 1001 N. Tustin Ave., in Santa Ana. <br />The following is a summary of the interview, it is not verbatim or necessarily in order of conversation, but organized <br />for the purpose of clarity. Please refer to the audio-recording for exact quotes, comments and statements. <br />On April 7, 2023, COOPMAN was a member of the OCGMC Trauma Team that provided patient care for <br />MELGAREJO. <br />was a properly licensed California RN, who was employed as a Trauma Nurse Clinician in the OCGMC <br />Emergency Department. He had held an RN Certification for approximately thirteen (13) years. <br />On April 7, 2023, at approximately 19:10 hours, MELGAREJO arrived in the OCGMC Emergency Department <br />Trauma Room with penetrating trauma wounds to his left upper extremity, left lower extremity and right lower <br />extremity. Tourniquets had been applied to the before mentioned areas and MELGAREJO was awake and oriented. <br />MELGAREJO was treated by OCGMC Trauma Surgeon FRANK NASTANSKI, who identified the following injuries: <br />•Two (2) penetrating trauma wounds to left upper arm <br />•Two (2) penetrating trauma wounds to left upper thigh <br />•Four (4) penetrating trauma wounds to right upper thigh and calf <br />•Fracture of left humerus <br />Medical treatment received by MELGAREJO in the Emergency Department included the following: <br />•Verifying no arterial bleeding <br />•Stabilizing blood pressure and heart rate <br />•Cleaning and closing all wounds <br />•Splinting of left arm <br />•CT Scans and X-Rays <br />While conducting a Pelvis X-Ray on MELGAREJO, located and recovered a bullet from the area <br />near MELGAREJO'S rectum area. The bullet was given to SAPD Officer DAVID TAROY. <br />While in the Emergency Department, MELGAREJO told that he was running when he was shot. <br />At approximately 21:45 hours, MELGAREJO was admitted into the hospital and moved to Room #20. <br /> placed a hold on MELGAREJO'S pre-admittance blood at approximately 01:28 hours. <br />The interview with concluded at approximately 01:30 hours. <br />A copy of the interview audio-recording was subsequently downloaded into the Orange County District Attorney <br />(OCDA) Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS). <br />Narrative By: Toth, Thomas, 366 Audio Recorded <br />OCDA 23-001104.009 Report by Toth, Thomas 366 Page 3 of 4
