OCDA Personnel:Toth, Thomas 366 <br />Involvement:Reporting 4/19/2023 <br />OCDA Personnel:Berry, Stan 235 <br />Involvement:Approving 5/2/2023 <br />Narrative: <br />On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at approximately 00:30 hours, Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) Detective RENE <br />BONILLA, SAPD Sergeant JORGE LOPEZ and I conducted a digital audio-recorded interview with Registered <br />Nurse (RN) , regarding the officer-involved shooting (OIS) of MARVIN MELGAREJO involving <br />SAPD. The interview took place in the fourth floor Medical/Surgical Unit of the Orange County Global Medical <br />Center (OCGMC), located at 1001 N. Tustin Ave., in Santa Ana. <br />The following is a summary of the interview, it is not verbatim or necessarily in order of conversation, but organized <br />for the purpose of clarity. Please refer to the audio-recording for exact quotes, comments and statements. <br />MIJARES was a properly licensed California RN, who had held an RN Certification for approximately thirteen (9) <br />years and had been employed by OCGMC for approximately (9) years. <br />On April 7, 2023, at approximately 21:35 hours, was advised that a patient being treated for multiple <br />gunshot wounds in the OCGMC Emergency Department would soon be transferred to to her care in the facility's <br />fourth floor Medical/Surgical Unit. According to Emergency Department personnel, the patient, MARVIN <br />MELGAREJO, had sustained two (2) gunshot wounds to the left bicep, two (2) gunshot wounds to the upper left <br />thigh, two (2) gunshot wounds to the upper right thigh and two (2) gunshot wounds to the right calf. In addition, <br />MELGAREJO was found to have a fracture of his left humerus. <br />As part of the patient transfer briefing, was further advised regarding the treatments MELGAREJO <br />received during his time in the Emergency Department, which included Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) <br />scans, cleansing/closing of wounds and left arm splinting. Medications administered to MELGAREJO in the <br />Emergency Department included two (2) grams of Ancef, one (1) milligram of Dilaudid and one milligram of Versed. <br />MIJARES explained Ancef was an antibiotic and both Dilaudid and Versed were pain relief medications. <br />At approximately 2200 hours, MELGAREJO was transferred from the Emergency Department to OCGMC Patient <br />Care Room 420, where upon contact, MIJARES found MELGAREJO to be alert and oriented with stable vital signs. <br />During ' initial contact with MELGAREJO, he told her he was shot while running. <br />While in the Medical/Surgical Unit, administered the following medications to MELGAREJO: Intravenous <br />(IV) fluids, Ancef, Senekot and Norco. <br />The interview with concluded at approximately 00:40 hours. <br />A copy of the interview audio-recording was subsequently downloaded into the Orange County District Attorney <br />(OCDA) Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS). <br />Narrative By: Toth, Thomas, 366 Audio Recorded <br />OCDA 23-001104.010 Report by Toth, Thomas 366 Page 2 of 2
