SUMMARY <br />On Friday, 04/07/23, at approximately 1841 hours, Santa Ana Police Officers C. Coffer and R. Santaella advised over <br />the primary dispatch channel they had been involved in an officer involved shooting on Rosewood Ave north of <br />Bishop St. They further advised the suspect fled from a vehicle, shots were fired in a northerly direction, and the <br />suspect fled northbound on Rosewood Ave. <br />Additional officers responded to the scene, and another occupant in the suspect vehicle was ordered from the vehicle <br />and detained. <br />A few minutes later, Corporal Solorio advised there was an officer involved shooting, all officers were ok, and a <br />firearm was located at the scene. <br />MET Detectives McKee and T. Bell advised they had located the suspect at 437 S Shelton St. The suspect, later <br />identified as Marvin Mercado Melgarejo, had apparent gunshot wounds and was transported to Orange County Global <br />Medical Center for medical treatment. <br />A crime scene perimeter was established. <br />A public safety statement was obtained from Officers C. Coffer and R. Santaella. Officer Coffer stated he fired <br />approximately 8 rounds in a northerly direction. Officer R. Santaella stated he fired approximately 4 rounds in a <br />northerly direction. Both officers advised the suspect was last seen running northbound along the east sidewalk and it <br />was unknown if the suspect was struck by gunfire. <br />The firearm that was discarded by Marvin Melgarejo was a black, compact, 9mm firearm comprised of a black <br />polymer frame and a black pistol upper. There were no visible serial numbers on the slide or the lower receiver. This <br />is commonly referred to as a Privately Made Firearm (PMF) or a ³Ghost Gun´which lacks a commercially-applied <br />serial number, rendering the weapon untraceable. <br />NARRATIVE: <br />Friday, April 7, 2023 <br />2100 hours: <br />Additional members of the Homicide Unit arrived for a preliminary briefing conducted by Sgt Sarabia. <br />Sergeant Sarabia informed us that he was notified earlier this evening by Acting Watch Commander O.T. Sanchez <br />#2703 of an officer-involved shooting that had occurred at approximately 1841 hours at S. Rosewood Avenue and W. <br />Bishop Street.6DQWD $QD 3ROLFH 'HSDUWPHQW &LYLF &HQWHU 3DWURO Officers C. Cofer #3626 and R. Santaella #3717 <br />conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle and the driver emerged from the vehicle armed with a handgun. An officer- <br />involved shooting ensued and the suspect fled to the area of 400 S. Shelton Street where responding officers located <br />him suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. <br />Sergeant Sarabia informed us there were no witnessing officers to the shooting and there was one civilian witness <br />who was transported to the police department for interview by investigators. Santa Ana Police Department Patrol <br />Sergeant M. Wharton #2888 was the designated scene supervisor. <br />I was assigned to document the crime scene. <br />2115 hours: <br />I arrived at the crime scene and parked on Bishop St, west of Rosewood Ave. The scene was cordoned off with crime <br />scene tape, utilizing uniformed police officers in marked patrol units to provide scene security, preventing access into <br />the scene by vehicular and pedestrian traffic. <br />2131 hours: <br />A briefing was conducted at the scene by supervisors from the Santa Ana Police Department. Present at the briefing <br />were personnel from the Santa Ana Police Department, the Orange County District Attorney¶s Office, and the Orange <br />County Sheriff-Coroner Department Crime Laboratory. <br />Sergeant Wharton informed us that the location of the incident was 527 S. Rosewood Avenue. The initial police radio <br />broadcast of the incident occurred this evening at 1841 hrs. Santa Ana Police Department Officers C.
