Mr. Trevino provided clarification for reconsideration on Commission's direction <br />on July 25, 2005 regarding the materials and design of the museum's entry way. <br />1 <br />MOTION: Reconsider the action taken on July 25, 2005 Planning Commission. <br />MOTION: Cribb SECOND: De La Torre <br />VOTE: AYES: Cribb, De La Torre, Leo, Lutz, Mondo, Nalle (6) <br />NOES: None (0) <br />ABSTAIN: None (0) <br />ABSENT: Gartner (1) <br />Senior Planner Sergio Klotz recapped the conditions of approval for The Bowers <br />Museum expansion related to the building materials and architecture of the arch <br />entry way. <br />Mr. Trevino commented that the arch design had been modified in response to <br />Commission comments and that real stone was preferred to faux stone. <br />Mr. Coffee reviewed the refinements to the arched form, the facade with natural <br />stone and the design of the existing arches on the elevation. Renderings <br />presented highlighted the revised arch. Mr. Coffee also discussed his research <br />on the costs of real stone versus the synthetic materials. <br />Commission discussion ensued regarding elevation, material sample submitted <br />to the Historic Resources Commission, material selection longevity, costs <br />comparisons and the design of the archway. <br />Mr. Trevino commented on aesthetics of the material and cost factors. <br />1 <br />Vice Chair Leo suggested obtaining bids for natural stone with the final decision <br />on materials to be dealt with in the future, allowing The Bowers Museum ample <br />time to find donor(s) for natural materials. Mr. Kaufman suggested approval of <br />natural materials "prior to construction"; if unable to find a donor within a year, <br />then revert to synthetic materials. <br />MOTION: Recommendation that the City Council: <br />a. Approve and adopt the Mitigated Negative Declaration and <br />Mitigation Monitoring Program, Environmental Review No. 2005- <br />45. <br />b. Adopt an ordinance approving Amendment Application No. 2005- <br />04 and Specific Development Plan No. 78 (SD-78). <br />c. Adopt a resolution approving Conditional Use Permit No. 2005-20 <br />as conditioned. <br />d. The secondary arched entry along Main Street shall be detailed and <br />articulated similar to the Old Orange County Courthouse structure <br />design as submitted in plan dated August 22, 2005. <br />e. Natural stone shall be utilized surrounding the secondary arched <br />entry along Main Street.
