DISCUSSION OF RANCH STYLE HOMES <br />Principal Planner Sergio Klotr introduced Debbie Howell-Ardilla, Consultant with <br />Sapphos Environmental Inc. who gave a presentation regarding the Ranch Style <br />Homes, many of which are now over 50 years old. She also provided the <br />Commissioners with a guideline entitled, "Reading the Ranch House" describing <br />the character-defining features and subtypes of the Ranch House architecture. <br />0 <br />Ms. Howell elaborated on the character defining feature categories: Form and <br />Massing; Use of Rustic Materials; Designed Connection to the Outside; Roof Line <br />and Stylistic Details (Informal, Rustic). Subtypes of Ranch Houses included: <br />California Ranch House, Contemporary Ranch House, Traditional Ranch House, <br />the Ranch House (Colonial Revival variant), and the Novelty Ranch House (Swiss <br />Chalet, Tudor, Polynesian/Asian variants). <br />Commission expressed a range of opinions regarding windows, alterations, <br />informing applicants that changes should be like-for-like, and requested <br />information regarding post-1950 architectural standards in the Citywide Design <br />Guidelines. <br />Historic Resources Commission Minutes <br />2 <br />November 6, 2008 <br />
