IssO'I/? 8/1 ? <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2011-XXX <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA DIRECTING THE CITY <br />MANAGER TO ADOPT A POLICY ON HEALTHY <br />EATING AND ACTIVE LIVING <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA <br />ANA AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds, <br />determines and declares as follows: <br />A. The residents of Santa Ana face many challenging health issues <br />including a high rate of obesity, which directly relates to food <br />choices and sedentary lifestyles. <br />B. Ina 2004 study, the California Department of Education found 34.8 <br />percent of Santa Ana youth in the Stn 7tn and Stn grades are <br />overweight or obese. <br />C. The City of Santa Ana is committed to addressing obesity and <br />diabetes-related illness among Santa Ana residents by improving <br />food and physical activity environments. <br />D. The annual cost to California in medical bills, workers <br />compensation and lost productivity due to individuals who are <br />overweight, obese, and physically inactive exceeds $41 billion. <br />E. Supporting the health of residents and the local workforce through <br />prevention policies and programs would decrease chronic disease <br />and health care costs and increase productivity. <br />F. In an effort to fight obesity, improve health outcomes and <br />encourage fitness among youth in Santa Ana, the City has created <br />or joined with several organizations determined to provide healthy <br />food and activity choices for the residents of Santa Ana, including: <br />1) The Healthy Cities Initiative committee comprised of <br />representatives from non-profits and community <br />organizations directed to pursue healthy alternatives for <br />children and adults. Their focus is on healthy choices at <br />55A-3
