Commission discussion ensued regarding the adjacent parking lot, the art deco <br />design of the building and any reuse of the existing signage, setbacks on Bristol <br />Street and Santa Ana Boulevard, walkway and plans for the bus stop to be closer to <br />the building for easier public access. <br />No written communications were received. The public hearing was opened. <br />Applicant Kevin Coleman spoke in support of the project and commented on the <br />• signage. He plans on working with a custom neon sign fabricator, Dr. Neon, to reuse <br />and restore existing signs where feasible, as well as to reconstruct signs that cannot <br />be salvaged. Mr. Coleman stated that he plans to salvage the existing cast metal <br />signs that are currently applied to the building. Mr. Coleman commented that he <br />appreciated the city staff facilitating the neighborhood association(s) for their input. <br />Chairman Alderete commented on the original signage and Mr. Coleman stated that <br />his comments were addressed in the conditions of approval. <br />There were no additional speakers. PUBLIC COMMENTS (on non-agenda items) <br />Mr. Coleman stated that he hopes to bring plans before the Planning Commission in <br />the near future for the re-use of remnant parcels on Bristol Street. <br />5. STAFF COMMENTS <br />Planning Manager Karen Haluza announced that the City had won two awards for <br />the Transit Zoning Code. The Orange Section of the American Planning Association <br />awarded the City the 2011 Outstanding Planning Award for a Focused Issue. The <br />Southern California Association of Governments awarded the City the 2011 <br />Compass Blueprint Excellence Award for Visionary Planning for Mobility. She <br />indicated that the APA nomination would now proceed to statewide competition and <br />she congratulated the Planning Commission on their efforts. <br />6. PLANNING COMMISSION MEMBER COMMENTS <br />Commissioner Mill <br />Inquired about regulations to oversee the control of alcohol consumption at <br />the Artists Village. Planning Manager Haluza responded that SAPD has been <br />• monitoring and will be evaluating the regulations. City Attorney Hodge stated <br />that there are permits to regulate sale of alcohol at events, but that the Police <br />Department prohibits the illegal distribution of alcohol to minors. <br />Planning Commission Minutes 4 May 9, 2011 <br />
