program completion the students receive Microsoft Office Specialists Certification from
<br />Certiport. Additionally, through a unique partnership with Santa Ana College, students
<br />enrolled in this program are co -enrolled at the college, attend class on campus one day a
<br />week, and, upon successful completion of the Computer Skills Training Module, receive up
<br />to 3 college credits toward their Associates Degree. Santa Ana College also offers campus
<br />tours, a Counseling 303 class and provides academic placement and career assessment to
<br />students enrolled in the OCA. Beginning this year, OCA graduates will be awarded a state -
<br />approved certificate by Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education.
<br />• Medical Careers: The Medical Careers Academy (MCA) meets Monday -Thursday from
<br />8AM-4PM and Fridays from 8AM-noon. The program trains youth as both administrative and
<br />clinical medical assistants. Classes include basic computer and the use of Electronic Medical
<br />Record and Medisoft, standard software used in most private medical practices. The
<br />administrative medical assistant curriculum emphasizes medical terminology, health
<br />insurance, record-keeping, telephone techniques, customer safety, computer skills, health
<br />safety, communication skills and professionalism. Clinical medical assistant students learn to
<br />measure vital signs, assist the physician with procedures, administer medications and give
<br />injections, record electrocardiograms (ECGs), draw blood samples and perform basic
<br />laboratory tests. Students also learn medical terminology and anatomy, basic math skills and
<br />medication dosage calculations. Upon completion of the job -training program, MCA
<br />students participate in 4 -week externships at local health systems, including Memorial
<br />Medical Care clinics, La Amistad, Lestonnac Free Clinic, Share Our Selves, St. Jude
<br />Heritage Medical Group and the Coalition of Orange County Community Clinics. The MCA
<br />certifies its students with the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification from
<br />the American Heart Association. Beginning in Fall 2012, MCA students will receive a state -
<br />approved certificate from Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education.
<br />• Construction: The Construction Academy meets Monday -Thursday from 8AM-4PM. Led by
<br />a licensed general contractor with over 10 years of field experience, the building -trades
<br />training program focuses on construction fundamentals and incorporates: safety awareness
<br />and training, industry -related math proficiency, construction theory, hands-on experience,
<br />adherence to attendance policies, mentoring, job coaching, and leadership development.
<br />Hands-on training includes framing, roofing, drywall installation, electrical and plumbing.
<br />Apprentices participate in two hours of daily math training. Classes concentrate on the
<br />algebra, geometry and trigonometry needed for basic construction principles, such as
<br />estimating material costs, reading blueprints, rough carpentry, and so forth. By the end of the
<br />16 -week training, students improve their math abilities by an average of two grade levels.
<br />Once students learn concepts in the classroom, they move to the lab for hands-on training and
<br />ultimately build a home from the ground up. Upon successful program completion, each
<br />graduate is awarded a fully -equipped tool belt to bring with them to their eventual job site.
<br />Taller San Jose certifies each graduate with 10 hours of Occupational Safety and Health
<br />Administration (OSHA) training. OSHA training gives employees in the construction
<br />industry the ability to minimize liability to the company and also reduces employee risk.
<br />In 2007, the Construction Academy launched Hope Builders, Inc. a social enterprise and general
<br />contracting venture that expands the program's existing training services, creates jobs for
<br />unemployed youth and serves the affordable housing needs of low-income families. Hope
<br />Builders, Inc. operates with a double bottom line—it employs graduates of Taller San Jose's
