<br />All sex offenders
<br />The study compared recidivism rates
<br />among prisoners who served different
<br />lengths of time before being released
<br />from prison in 1994. No clear associa-
<br />tion was found between how long they
<br />were in prison and their recidivism rate
<br />(table 26). For example, those sex
<br />offenders who served from 7 to 12
<br />months were rearrested for a new sex
<br />crime at a higher rate (5.2 %) than
<br />those who served slightly less time
<br />(3.8 %), which seemed to suggest that
<br />serving more time raised the recidivism
<br />rate. But other comparisons suggested
<br />the opposite. Compared to men who
<br />were confined for 7 to 12 months (5.2%
<br />rearrest rate), those who served more
<br />time (13 to 18 months) were less likely
<br />to be rearrested for any new sex crime
<br />(4.1%).

<br />Of the 9,691 released sex offenders,
<br />21.5% (2,084 of the 9,691) had only 1
<br />arrest in their criminal record up to the
<br />time they were released (table 27).
<br />That one arrest was the arrest for the
<br />sex crime that resulted in a prison
<br />term. The remaining 78.5% (7,607
<br />men) had the arrest for their imprison-
<br />ment offense in their record, and they
<br />also had at least 1 earlier arrest for
<br />some type of crime. For example,
<br />some had an earlier arrest for theft or a
<br />drug offense. Most of them did not
<br />have an earlier arrest for a sex crime.
<br />Compared to the 2,084 sex offenders
<br />with the 1 arrest in their criminal record,
<br />the 7,607 with a longer prior arrest
<br />record were more likely to be

<br />Of the 3,115 released rapists, the
<br />majority (83.1% of the 3,115, or 2,589
<br />men) had more than 1 arrest (for any
<br />type of crime) prior to release from
<br />prison in 1994. Of these 2,589 released
<br />rapists, 5.4% (140) had a new arrest
<br />for a sex crime. The rate was lower
<br />(3.0 %) for the 526 released rapists
<br />with no prior arrest.
<br />Results for sexual assaulters followed
<br />the same pattern: the 5,017 sexual
<br />assaulters with more than 1 prior arrest
<br />(76.3% of 6,576 is 5,017) were more
<br />likely to be rearrested for a new sex
<br />crime (6.2 %) than the 1,559 with just
<br />the 1 prior arrest (23.7% of 6,576 is
<br />1, 559).
