Set Public Hearing For_ <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Approve an appropriation adjustment accepting the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) "Sobriety <br />Checkpoint Grant Program" administered by the University of California Berkeley Safe Transportation <br />Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) in the amount of $161,000.00 into the revenue account <br />(account no.16514002-52001) and appropriate same into the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) <br />"Sobriety Checkpoint Grant Program" expenditure accounts (account no. 16514410-VARIOUS). <br />DISCUSSION <br />The Santa Ana Police Department has been awarded a grant from the State of California, Office of Traffic <br />Safety (OTS) under the "Sobriety Checkpoint Grant Program". Time tested and best practice strategies will <br />be used on an overtime basis to conduct DUI Checkpoint Operations. Goals and objectives of DUI <br />checkpoints include: reduce the number of persons killed and injured in crashes involving alcohol, increase <br />awareness of DUI enforcement, educate the community, apprehend DUI drivers, arrest or cite for criminal <br />activity discovered during the contact. The grant funded checkpoints are always publicized to various media <br />outlets, thus enhancing the overall deterrent effect. <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />Approval of the appropriation adjustment will enhance the OTS, "Sobriety Checkpoint Grant Program" <br />revenue account (account no. 16514002-52001) by $161,000.00 and increase the same into the OTS, <br />"Selective Traffic Enforcement Program" expenditure account (account no. 16514410-VARIOUS). <br />APPROVED AS TO FUNDS AND ACCOUNTS: <br />Car os as <br />Acting Chief of Police <br />Police Department <br />:i C\ <br />Francisco Gutierrez <br />Executive Director <br />Finance & Mgmt.
