ORANGE COUNTY CONSERVATION CORPS <br />Corpsmember Job Description <br />POSITION: A corpsmember works on various conservation and community service projects, and may be required <br />to assist in disaster relief projects in the event of certain natural disasters such as Floods, fires, or earthquakes. <br />Under the direction of OCCC staff, a corpsmember learns the skills necessary to complete the projects while <br />gaining valuable work experience. The position is initially for twelve months but may be renewed for an additional <br />six months based on satisfactory performance. <br />The OCCC has an education program consisting of classes in traditional academic subjects as well as <br />independent living skills including making healthy lifestyle choices. Corpsmembers who are not high school <br />graduates are required to pursue a study course leading to their high school diploma. Corpsmembers who are high <br />school graduates will be required to complete a life skills curriculum and pursue higher education goals. <br />Specific areas of employment work experience projects may include: <br />r Natural resource enhancement: Tree planting stream clearance, erosion control, timber <br />stands improvement; trail construction, maintenance, and wildlife habitat improvement. <br />7 Construction: Carpentry, plumbing, masonry, including framing, fence and rock wall <br />construction. <br />r Maintenance: Renovation of structures, painting, repair, and remodeling of building both <br />interior and exterior. <br />'r Landscaping: Plant identification and propagation, planting, sprinklers, weed abatement <br />irrigation installation, and nursery operations. <br />Emergency Response: Clean-up assistance following fires, Floods, oil spills, and earthquakes. <br />r Recycling: Develop recycling awareness skills, learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle <br />materials. <br />Qualifications: There are 6 basic requirements for joining the OCCC: <br />r Applicants must be Orange County residents <br />At least 18 but not over 25 years of age <br />Legal right to work <br />➢ In good health <br />Willing to work hard doing physical labor under sometimes difficult conditions <br />Available to commit Monday -Thursday from 6:45am — 5:15pm, every other Friday 8am — 12pm. <br />Personal qualities: A corpsmember must have: <br />s A desire to develop and maintain good physical fitness and stamina <br />'v The ability to do heavy labor, including lifting minimum of 50lbs <br />Must be willing to: <br />Accept responsibility <br />Be committed towards achieving education goals <br />Develop good work habits <br />Demonstrate punctuality and dependability <br />Develop team building skills <br />The corpsmembers must: <br />➢ Work well with people of different racial and cultural backgrounds <br />r Conform to OCCC uniform and grooming standards <br />Adhere to safe and professional work experiences practices <br />Training: A corpsmember receives training in: <br />Proper tool use Safe work practices Flood control method <br />CPR Water safety Recycling techniques <br />Chainsaw operation Fire suppression techniques <br />Corpsmembers are encouraged to work towards a Crew Leader position. Those selected for these receive <br />specialized leadership training.
