REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />DECEMBER 16, 2013 <br />TITLE: <br />2014 CHILDREN'S WATER EDUCATION <br />FESTIVAL & ORANGE COUNTY GIFT OF <br />HISTORY EVENT SPONSORSHIPS <br />CITY MAAAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />❑ As Recommended <br />❑ As Amended <br />❑ Ordinance on 1" Reading <br />❑ Ordinance on 2ntl Reading <br />❑ Implementing Resolution <br />❑ Set Public Hearing For <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Authorize the City Manager to sponsor two children's educational events held in Orange County by <br />Orange County Water District Groundwater Guardian Team and the Children's Education <br />Foundation of Orange County at a level of $5,000 each. <br />DISCUSSION <br />Approval of this recommended action will allow the City to sponsor two children's educational <br />events in Orange County: the Children's Water Education Festival and the Orange County Gift of <br />History. Each $5,000 sponsorship will be used to subsidize transportation costs for Santa Ana <br />Unified School District attendees. Following each event, City staff will evaluate the effectiveness of <br />the City's sponsorship to determine future participation. <br />Children's Water Education Festival <br />2014 marks the 18th anniversary of the Children's Water Education Festival — the largest event of <br />its kind in the United States. The Festival will take place March 26 -27, 2014, at the University of <br />California, Irvine, and will be presented by the Orange County Water District, Disneyland Resort, the <br />National Water Research Institute, and the OCWD Groundwater Guardian Team. An estimated <br />7,000 third -, fourth -, and fifth -grade Orange County students and their teachers are expected to <br />attend. They will be learning about protecting and preserving water supplies and the environment. <br />Since its inception, more than 100,000 children have participated in this unique, hands -on <br />educational experience. The Festival is provided at no cost to schools, making public and private <br />financial support crucial to its success and its continued growth. <br />Orange County Gift of History <br />The annual Orange County Gift of History event is the kick -off to a year -long program presented by <br />the Children's Education Foundation of Orange County. The curriculum is designed to teach <br />Orange County's third -grade students that history is alive and all around them. <br />29A -1 <br />
