Dur[ng the first post war decade, 1946 to 1956, the APP[ <br />ut)der,ment mayor dq iz!lopment. The decades maw tht construction of <br />Mater Dei High School, two (2) churches and Seven (7) tract homes. <br />In addition, Santa Ana Community ollcgt- became operational during the <br />early part of this decade to meet the educational need-5 of the returning <br />servicemen. Originally, Santa Ana Community College utilized buildings <br />which had been purchased from the Santa Arta Army Air Rare and <br />moved to the college site. None of thesc- buildings survived to the <br />present day. <br />South of Seventeenth Street, many small commercial establish- <br />ments, such as gasoline stations, restaurants and general offices, were <br />erected. In addition, many of the existing residential structures were <br />converted to commercial office use. <br />The development north of Sevcnteenth Street was somewhat <br />different. This had been largely devotc-d to citrus groves with only a <br />Few scattered structures. All of these structures were rerhoved and th3 <br />bulk of the area was devoted to tract duplex housing. Horner <br />Shopping Plaza to the ntorthwest of the intersection of 8risW and <br />Seventeenth was built, as was Santiago Elementary School east of <br />Bristol.
