Councilmember Amezcua: <br />• Thanked all for efforts to bring forth the 5-year Strategic Plan; and <br />• Supports Arts & Culture Commission. <br />Councilmember Reyna: <br />• Congratulated all graduates and wished them best of luck; <br />• Participated in the Higher Education Center at Santa Ana Library, in <br />attendance was Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and members of the <br />Rancho Santiago Community College District; <br />• Encouraged all to shop in Santa Ana; and <br />• Announced that East Sports Area having grand opening in Downtown <br />Santa Ana. <br />Councilmember Benavides: <br />• Historic event in approving Strategic Plan and funding; <br />• Attended ribbon cutting for Garfield Fitness Center; Promises Made, <br />Promises Kept; <br />• Commented on recent incidents over the weekend that challenge the <br />community; need creative solutions; and <br />• Attending model program in Compton to integrate faith community. <br />Councilmember Martinez: <br />• Thanked and congratulated Interim Public Works Director, William Galvez <br />and staff during Public Works Week; approved new position for Active <br />Transportation Coordinator that will be key; <br />• Recognized staff for actively applying for grants and receiving competitive <br />funds; <br />• Noted that City has high pedestrian fatality rates; <br />• Commented on grand opening of Garfield Fitness Center and appreciate <br />Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director and staff for efforts; <br />• Consider efforts by City Council that benefit the community <br />Councilmember Sarmiento: <br />• Echoed comments by Councilmember Martinez; testament that staff <br />respected and decorum maintained; <br />• Commented on importance of Strategic Plan and process employed; value <br />judgments need to be incorporated in future allocations; thanked <br />community for participation; and <br />• Thanked for adjourning meeting in memory of LAPD Officer Roberto <br />Sanchez. <br />Mayor Pro Tern Tinajero: <br />• Commented on Agenda Item 6513, noted that in 1952 the salary for City <br />Councilmembers set and has not been amended since; proposal is fair <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 15 MAY 20, 2014 <br />
