ARTICLE X <br />10.0 OTHER LEAVES OF ABSENCE <br />10.1 Sick Leave. <br />A. Definition. Except as otherwise provided below, sick leave shall be <br />deemed to mean absence from duty of an employee because of illness, <br />injury, medical, or dental appointment that prevents the employee from <br />performing the duties of his or her position, and shall be deemed to <br />include time in quarantine resulting from exposure to a contagious <br />disease. <br />B. Accrual. Each employee shall be entitled to, and shall earn, one (1), eight <br />(8) hour working day of sick leave for each full calendar month of service <br />in which he is employed by the City with full pay; provided, however, any <br />absence on sick leave for a period of time greater than fifteen (15) <br />consecutive calendar days in any one (1) calendar month shall not be <br />considered to be service entitling an employee to earn sick leave as <br />aforesaid. Subject to the other provisions in this Article, sick leave shall <br />accrue to the credit of each employee to the extent that it is not used. <br />C. Authorized Only When Necessary. Use of sick leave by City employees <br />shall be authorized as follows: <br />1. Sick leave is not a right which an employee may use at his or her <br />discretion, but shall be allowed only in cases of necessity and <br />actual sickness or disability, or as authorized in Subsection J <br />below. <br />2. When an accepted industrial illness or injury has caused an <br />employee's absence, for which benefits are required under the <br />State Workers' Compensation Insurance and Safety Act, paid sick <br />leave will be allowed such employee during the first three (3) days <br />of the statutory waiting period. If the workers' compensation related <br />illness or injury continues past the initial three (3) consecutive days, <br />the employee will have the three (3) used sick days recredited to <br />his or her account, if the employee remains off work longer than 14 <br />days. Paid sick leave will continue until the fourth (4th) day when <br />the City pays the employee workers' compensation benefits for <br />such illness or injury.
