Also address Integrity) <br />The Whitson Home is significant as a contributor to the French Park Historic District and Is architecturally distinctive as an <br />intact and characteristic example of the Craftsman bungalow, the most popular style of residential architecture during the first <br />two decades of the twentieth century. It was built In 1911 at 909 North Spurgeon for Dr. Leroy Whitson, a local dentist, and <br />his wife Mattis, who lived in the house for forty years. In 1987, the house was moved to this location and restored by Michael <br />and Martens Braidic. <br />Santa Ana was founded by William Spurgeon in 1869 as a speculative town site on part of the Spanish land grant known as <br />Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. In 1877, Spurgeon, along with James McFadden and James Fruit, formed the Western <br />Development Company with the intention of bringing the Southern Pacific Railroad from Its then terminus in Anaheim into <br />(See Continuation Sheet 3 of 3.) <br />811.
