Clerk of the Council
Santa Ana City Hall
20 Civic Center Plaza
Santa Ana, CA 92702
January 7, 2015
Re: Protest of Proposed Rate Increases for Water and Sewer
Parcel # 399 - 132.35
To the Clerk of the Council:
701.5 JAN 20 P11 4: m
CITY OF WUP,, AHA
CLERK OF' Cnu1 ,jrr
I am protesting the water and sewer rate increase that is proposed for the city. I have owned this home
for 44 years. When we moved here, we paid only $6 per month for water service. Rates have increased
steadily over the years, and while I recognize that rates must increase, the proposed increase is
unreasonable,
To begin with, I have over 1,000 square feet of parkway that belongs to the city that I am responsible to
maintain. I have always kept this parkway looking nice, and in order to maintain it, I must water and care
for the lawn. Due to the large square footage of parkway and lawn, my meter is a 1" meter. We already
pay over double of what the 5/8" meter households pay, and the proposed rate increase for this size
meter as outlined in your Notice of Public Hearing is unreasonable. To go from $16.40 to $30.50 in one
year is an 86% increase. Over the five year period, the rate will increase to $57.30 which is a 249%
increase. This is shocking and unreasonable, and this does not even take into consideration the
commodity charge or the sewer Increase.
It seems extremely unfair that residences with smaller meter sizes (5/8 ") will only see increases of 5.7%
this year and 98% over the five year period, while ours will be 8696' and 249% respectively. While I don't
support the rate increase, if a rate increase is to be applied, it should be applied equally to all residents.
My wife and I are on Social Security and do not see how we will be able to handle these rate increases.
We will be forced to stop watering the lawn and parkway, or else be forced to move out of the area.
Please take our concerns into consideration as you make this decision.
Sincerely,
ar e
Alan Dale
2330 N.
