El Mercadito Santenera <br />Site: Grand Ave — 2nd and 4`' <br />Mission statement: El Mercadito Santanera serves as a community space that promotes healthy food, <br />the development of small/local business and cultural and educational opportunities for the residents of <br />Santa Ana. <br />Key services and activities: <br />1. A central market to host and incubate local micro business to sell their services and products <br />■ Sells healthy food, seafood, produce, local, organic, traditional herbs, spices, grains, cultural <br />artifacts, native medicine, juices <br />■ Offers micro loans to small businesses and individuals <br />■ Workshops and education classes about starting and running a business <br />■ Technical assistance for small business owners <br />■ Offers office space for micro businesses and helps to legitimate their work <br />2. A destination place that people from inside and outside of Santa Ana who want to visit and buy <br />unique gifts and food items <br />■ Offers cultural entertainment during the daytime, evening and weekend <br />■ Used by members of the community and surrounding neighbourhood, commuters and weekend <br />visitors, DMV, employees of local businesses and schools <br />■ Accessible via active transportation — visitors can walk and bike there <br />■ Potential to locate the Mercadito at the entry way to the Wellness Corridor <br />3. Creates job opportunities for the community to run and maintain the space <br />■ Acts as a venue space for community events <br />■ Access to outdoor and indoor space <br />4. Provides affordable housing and lofts /artist studios <br />Participants in Workshop 3 suggested that the Mercadito should also be connected to the micro farm <br />or any other community based restaurants, businesses, services and programs.lbe idea of the Mercadito <br />has its roots in the Mercados of Latin America and reminds community members of the strong <br />connections that they have to those places.
