In all groundcover areas where bare soil is visible or where the groundcover is thin so <br />the soil is visible, the Contractor shall apply US Composting Council STA tested and <br />approved compost mulch 1 " -2" minus by 2" thick minimum twice per year (third week of <br />January and July) and as necessary to maintain uniform and complete coverage. Leaf <br />litter and other organic materials other than mulch shall be removed on a continuous <br />basis. <br />d) Monthly Replanting <br />On a monthly basis the Contractor shall, at their own expense, be responsible for the <br />replanting of ground cover of the same genus- species lost due to vandalism, normal <br />attrition or due to Contractor's failure to perform under the terms of this Agreement. The <br />Contractor shall plant the groundcover from 64 count flats at 12" on center to fill all bare <br />areas in the groundcover /shrub bed. <br />3. Shrub Care <br />a) Bi- weekly Pruning/Trimming <br />All shrubs shall be serviced every other week. Shrubs growing in the work areas shall <br />be pruned such that the plants remain in a healthy growing condition. Plant growth shall <br />be maintained to prevent overgrowth into passageways, walks, streets, view of signs or <br />in any manner deemed objectionable by the Director's Representative. Dead or <br />damaged limbs shall be removed so that no projections or stubs remain. <br />Pruning /trimming shall be done by hand shears or loppers in a manner to permit plants <br />to grow naturally in accordance with their normal growth characteristics. "Box hedging" <br />may be required on some shrubs, as set designated by the Director. "Box hedged" <br />plants will be required to have all three sides level and straight to the satisfaction of the <br />Director's Representative. In order to achieve straight and level lines of shrubs the <br />Contractor shall run string lines to assure straight pruning. Shear hedging or severe <br />pruning /trimming of plants, unless authorized by the Director's Representative, is not <br />permitted. Topping of plants whose natural growth stems from the base of the plant is <br />not permitted. Should the Contractor top, shear hedge or severely prune plants and <br />disfigure or damage the plants, the Contractor shall be responsible for replacing those <br />plants with like kind and size, subject to approval by the Director's Representative. <br />The Contractor may be requested from time to time to raise the bottom of the shrubs for <br />security reasons. <br />b) Monthly Shrub Replanting <br />On a monthly basis the Contractor, at his own expense, be responsible for the complete <br />removal and replacement of poor looking or unhealthy shrubs, In addition the Contractor <br />shall, at his own expense replace missing shrubs or shrubs lost due to normal attrition or <br />due to Contractor's failure to perform under the terms of this Agreement. The shrubs <br />shall be planted at appropriate spacing so as to achieve complete coverage once the <br />plant is 2 /3rds mature. <br />c) Mulching of Bare Areas <br />In all shrub areas where bare soil is visible or where the shrubs are so thin the soil is <br />visible, the Contractor shall apply US Composting Council STA tested and approved <br />compost mulch V -2" minus by 2" thick minimum twice annually (third week of January <br />and July) and as necessary to maintain uniform and complete coverage.
