Description- OCCTAC's After -School Classical Music program will provide 80 Santa Ana youth the opportunity to <br />learn to play a musical instrument of their choice (violin, viola, flute, clarinet); to learn to read music and musical <br />theory (music and rhythmic notation); to learn to play classical music; to play in strings and woodwind ensembles; to <br />learn to use music technology computer software programs that teach music theory, rhythm and ear training; and to <br />perform in 4 community concerts in Santa Ana throughout the year, including at one Santa Ana Council meeting, if <br />possible! <br />b. Frequency- Santa Ana youth will come to our after-school community center at least 3 times per week to engage <br />in the various musical activities and group lessons provided to them at our agency, in order to accelerate their <br />learning experience and musical skills learned. <br />c. How- A total of 80 youth recruited for this program will be divided into 20 violins, 20 violas, 20 flute and 20 clarinets. <br />All students will participate in a bi-weekly group class/Instrumental instruction (strings or woodwinds), 2) a Weekly <br />Music theory & musical notation group class, 3)a Weekly Rhythmic notation group class, 4) a Weekly Strings <br />Ensemble (violin and viola) OR Woodwinds Ensemble (flute and clarinet), and 5) a Monthly Chamber Music <br />Appreciation Class. In addition, all students will be required to attend a Music Theory Computer Lab and practice the <br />music theory, rhythm concepts, and ear appreciation lessons learned during the group instruction. <br />d. Target population- All Santa Ana youth/residents will be encouraged to participate in this after-school community <br />program, and especially those students that come from neighborhoods that have been identified as "neighborhood <br />initiative areas".
