COUNCIL AGENDA ITEMS <br />Pursuant to Santa Ana Charter Section 411, any member of the City Council may place <br />items on the City Council Agenda to be considered by the City Council. <br />85A. CONSIDER OPTIONS FOR FLYING THE RAINBOW FLAG AT CITY <br />HALL - Councilmember Tinajero <br />The following residents spoke on the matter: <br />• Dave Hoen, spoke in support of flying the Rainbow flag year- round; <br />symbolism of equality, love and acceptance. <br />• Darren Shippen, supports flying under the City flag on Harvey Milk <br />Day, Pride Day and any other designated dates. <br />• Ian Van Cong, spoke on behalf of Rainbow Foundation, spoke in <br />support of matter; thanked the City Council for historically supporting <br />lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. <br />Councilmember Tinajero, spoke of challenges, racism and other obstacles <br />that many segments of our community continue to face; Rainbow flag is a <br />welcoming symbol. <br />Councilmember Amezcua, supports matter; City will send strong message <br />that we embrace diversity - leaders. <br />Councilmember Benavides, difficult position for City Council to consider <br />because need to balance interest of all members of the community. <br />Councilmember Martinez, asked that equality be considered for all that <br />have contributed to this community; supports flying flag during Harvey Milk <br />and Pride Month; need policy to address all future requests. <br />Mayor Pro Tern Sarmiento, thanked Councilmember Tinajero for bringing <br />matter forward for consideration; supports issue; interest now legally <br />protected, flying flag is symbolic and embraces diversity; City to honor <br />struggles of LGBT and others. <br />Councilmember Reyna, supports process and adoption of policy for flying <br />various types of flags. <br />Mayor Pulido, inclusionary process essential, develop policy for flying <br />rainbow flag and other flags on designated dates; important to celebrate <br />equality and diversity of all. <br />Councilmember Tinajero, motion to direct staff to fly the Rainbow Flag on <br />Harvey Milk Day, May 22 thru end of June for Gay Pride Month, seconded <br />by Mayor Pro Tern Sarmiento. <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 17 SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 <br />1 0A -17 <br />
