Clear space is a floor area
that is 30" x 48" or, under given conditions is 36" x 48" or 30" x 60 ", in size. It is the space that allows
forward or parallel ( "side ") approach to a given accessible element of the facility (e.g. a lavatory or
water closet, drinking fountain, TTY telephone, sales counter, interpretive display or the like). Additional
clear space requirements apply at each side of the door (i.e. the "pull" or "push" sides). They must be
connected to an accessible ROT and they often allow encroachment under counters, sinks or other
spaces for knee and toe space. Clear spaces are, again, subject to surface condition requirements
and they must be level (1:48 maximum slope in any direction. They may not contain any abrupt
changes in level, have items projecting into the space (again with limitations) or have unmitigated
hazards present.
Details specific to clear space provision requirements may be found under the related specific sections
of the report (e.g. under doorway or sanitation requirements) however, generally applicable figures
are as shown on the page that follows:
CLEAR FLOOR SPACE
FRONT APPROACH AT AN ALCOVE
F----
i
FRONT APPROACH AT ALCOVE >24" DP
Ahv, 1]
December 15, 2014 SSA Project #14048 Page 19 of 28
