RESOLUTION NO. 2016 -028 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA IN SUPPORT OF DESALINATION AS A <br />LOCAL, RELIABLE SUPPLY OF CLEAN SAFE DRINKING <br />WATER <br />Whereas, the citizens of the city of Santa Ana expect and deserve safe, clean <br />and reliable drinking water in order to protect their health and safety; and <br />Whereas, the city of Santa Ana is dedicated to providing clean safe and reliable <br />drinking water for its citizens; and <br />Whereas, the State of California is subject to periodic drought conditions and is <br />currently in the fifth year of the most recent drought; and <br />Whereas, the policy of the state of California is to reduce its dependence on the <br />Sacramento -San Joaquin Delta; and <br />Whereas, the competing demands for traditional water resources has <br />demonstrated that new drinking water supply options need to be added to support the <br />California economy and the public health and safety of all Californians; and <br />Whereas, it is becoming more clear that in order to provide clean safe reliable <br />drinking water a diversified water portfolio must be developed that includes water <br />conservation, recycled water, stormwater capture, brackish groundwater desalination <br />and ocean water desalination in addition to more traditional water supply options; and <br />Whereas, Governor Jerry Brown's California Water Action Plan calls for all local <br />communities to diversify their local water supply options to meet their specific needs <br />including using brackish groundwater desalination and ocean water desalination, if <br />appropriate; and <br />Therefore be it resolved, that the city of Santa Ana supports desalinated water as <br />an important and reliable source for meeting total water demand, but in particular for <br />drinking water demand. Furthermore the continued and expanded production and <br />distribution of desalinated water for beneficial and permitted uses can improve regional <br />self - reliance by meeting a portion of future increased total drinking water demands. <br />ADOPTED this 3rd day of May, 2016. <br />Resolution No. 2016 -028 <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />
