jmf 9/22/16 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2016 -076 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA IN SUPPORT OF H.R. 6001 AND S. 3314 TO <br />ESTABLISH THE SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN LATINO <br />MUSEUM AND DESIGNATE THE ARTS AND INDUSTRIES <br />BUILDING AS ITS FUTURE LOCATION IN WASHINGTON, <br />D.C. <br />WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives and Senate introduced <br />in September 2016 H.R. 6001 and S. 3314; and <br />WHEREAS, these companion bills, H.R. 6001 and S. 3314, seek to establish <br />within the Smithsonian Institution the Smithsonian American Latino Museum; and <br />WHEREAS, these companion bills would designate the Arts and Industries <br />Building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as the future location for the <br />Smithsonian American Latino Museum and begin a planning period to identify viable <br />fundraising and construction models for the construction and operation of the Museum; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana's commitment to the arts, to the principles of <br />diversity, and to building a more inclusive community recognizes and appreciates that <br />the Latino community is vital to American life, art, culture, and industry as well as our <br />neighborhoods and communities; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana desires to support the establishment of <br />the proposed National Museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., among the <br />other landmark Smithsonian Institutions, to highlight the history, contributions and <br />successes of the Latino community, the largest demographic minority population in the <br />United States; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana wishes to encourage the creation of a <br />Smithsonian American Latino Museum, through its support of H.R. 6001 and S. 3314, <br />to honor Latinos and their significant contributions to our culture and society; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana's support will add impetus to Congress' effort, <br />and also help the City to be seen as active in matters of cultural affairs at the local and <br />national level. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana: <br />Section 1. The City Council endorses and offers its support of H.R. 6001 and <br />S. 3314, proposed federal legislation that would establish a National Smithsonian <br />American Latino Museum and designate the Arts and Industries Building as its future <br />location in Washington, D.C. <br />Resolution No. 2016 -076 <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />
