SECTION B <br /> DESCRIPTION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM <br /> B.1 DEMOGRAPHICS <br /> The City of Santa Ana is located in central Orange County. According to the 1990 <br /> Census, the population of Santa Ana is approximately 294,000. The ethnic <br /> composition is approximately 65.2% Hispanic, 23.1% Anglo, 9.1% Asian, 2.2% <br /> Black, and 0.4% Other. This population lives in approximately 75,000 dwelling <br /> units, with an average household size of 3.9 persons. The median income is $33,320 <br /> per household. The population is contained within an area of 27.2 square miles. <br /> Attached is a map of the City showing the City's designated land uses (Attachment <br /> 1) <br /> B.2 CURRENT SOLID WASTE COLLECTION SYSTEM <br /> B2.1 Curbside Collection <br /> Weekly curbside solid waste collection service in Santa Ana is mandatory. <br /> According to City records, there are 40,030 single-family and small businesses <br /> currently receiving curbside solid waste collection services. The City bills all <br /> curbside residential and commercial customers a flat monthly fee of$11.86 per <br /> month, of which $1.41 is retained by the City for administrative expenses, $0.74 is <br /> retained by the City to offset future program costs, and $9.71 is paid to the <br /> Contractor. The number of customers by service category are shown below: <br /> Customer Category # Customers <br /> Single family residences 34,149 <br /> Duplex units 3,494 <br /> Tri-plex units 744 <br /> Commercial/professional units 970 <br /> Apartmentlfour-plex units 673 <br /> Total 40,030 <br /> The City's current Contractor runs 19 curbside routes per day utilizing 3 axle, 38 <br /> cubic yard front loader trucks. Each route has a crew size of one person. <br /> B.2.2 Bin Service Collection <br /> Collection of multi-family residential solid waste is presently combined with <br /> commercial/industrial collection. A minimum of once-per-week collection service <br /> is mandatory. According to the Contractor's records, there are 2,112 residential <br /> bins and 4,183 commercial/industrial bins serviced in the City.
