The Spanish Colonial <br />Revival flourished between 1915.and 1940, reaching its apex during the 1920s and 19309. The movement received <br />widespread attention after the Panama -California Exposition'in San Diego in 1915, where lavish interpretations of <br />Spanish and Mexican prototypes were showcased. Easily recognizable hallmarks of the.Spanish Colonial Revival are <br />low-pitched roofs, usually with little orno overhangs and red tile roof coverings, flat roofs -surrounded by tiled parapets, <br />and stuccoed walls. The Spanish vocabulary also includes arches, asymmetry, balconies and patios, window,grilles, and <br />wood, wrought iron, tile, or stone decorative elements. The Spanish "Eclectic" Revival is a form of Spanish Revival <br />architecture.'Some of the features that make the Spanish "Eclectic" Revival unique to its form are associated to level of <br />detail In the materials and design of the home. For example, the Travis House uses distinctive painted ornate tiles <br />throughout the facade of the. home. The distinctive tile features are added 1n the arched entryways; at the front porch <br />steps and at the driveway entrance in the form of medallions to enhance the appearance of the. archway, <br />SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: <br />The Travis .House qualifies for Misting in the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties under Criterion 1 for its <br />exemplification of the distinguishing characteristics of the -Spanish "Eclectic" Revival.
