(Constriction data, alterations, and date of alterations)
April 4, 1933. Repair two chimneys.
January 7, 1952. Private garage, 20 by 20.
May 20, 1993. New stairway at south side.
RELATED FEATURES: (Other important features such as barns, sheds, fences, prominent or unusual trees, or landscape)
None.
(Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, settings, and
boundaries.)
Craftsman styling characterizes the appearance of this one and a half -story residence. Sheathed in narrow lap siding, the building is
capped by a side gable roof whose rafters are exposed in the overhanging eaves. A former sleeping porch, now enclosed with a band
of windows within its slightly arched opening, forms a large, front -gabled dormer centered over the fagade. Gable end treatment
includes slat venting, exposed braces, and bargeboards with notched ends. Spanning the fagade, the front porch is recessed beneath
the main gable. Stout brick pedestals carrying wooden posts divide the space into two bays. Arched beams span each bay. The south
bay contains the entry, framed by another pair of pedestals, these topped by Tuscan columns. An oak doorway pierced by narrow
slats of beveled glass is flanked by sidelights. In the north bay, a broadly proportioned tripartite window is banded by a transom
window whose mullions are offset from those of the main window. All of the openings are linked by a continuous header that wraps
the house. The most visible alteration of this nicely detailed and substantially intact Craftsman is an exterior staircase, added to the
south elevation in 1993.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS:
According to previous research, this house was built in 1915 by Charles and Clara Andres. Charles Andres came to Santa Ana in
1903 and initially purchased a 20 -acre property on McFadden Street. He sold this ranch in 1912 and bought another in Garden Grove.
Andres was a member of the Garden Grove Citrus Association, Garden Grove Walnut Growers Association, Garden Grove Farm
Center, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Evangelical Church of Santa Ana, and active in the Republican Party (Treasures).
RESOURCE ATTRIBUTES: (List attributes and codes from Appendix 4 of Instructions for Recording Historical Resources, Office
of Historic Preservation.)
HP2.
