Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries.)
One of the best examples of Craftsman styling in Santa Ana, the Smiley House is a generously scaled, two-story residence
with a cross -gabled roof. Roof detailing includes exposed rafter tails and knee braces in the eaves and decoratively carved
bargeboards at the gable ends. The gable faces contain latticework vents above bands of diamond and rectangular paneling,
slightly raised atop a row of corbels. Narrow clapboard sheathes the building. Wrapping the southeast corner, an attached
one-story porch is sheltered by a hipped, pent roof with a broadly pitched front gable located in front of the entry. The porch
rests on a stone foundation and is enclosed by a wood slat railing set between stone pedestals. Tapered piers support the
porch roof. Broad concrete steps lead up to the original wood and beveled glass door and flanking sidelights. A secondary
entrance is located behind a smaller gable on the south elevation. The north half of the fagade, which projects beneath a
front gable, contains a slant bay, set beneath a row of beams that support a second story overhang. Other than the bay,
which contains double -hung sash windows, the fagade windows are broadly proportioned tripartite arrangements.
See Continuation Sheet 3 of 3.
*P3b.
