• Asmaa Ahmed, opined many in the community are experiencing fear and <br />concern over anti -immigrant rhetoric. Expressed support of City Council for <br />declaring the City of Santa Ana a sanctuary city. <br />• Carlos Perea, opined there is a rise of anti -immigrant sentiment in Orange <br />County by elected officials. Expressed support for item. <br />• Doreen Myers, addressed City Council to express concerns over sanctuary <br />city concept. Expressed opposition to item. <br />• Nayali Diaz, opined City of Santa Ana is a majority minority, are not rapists <br />or criminals and only want to make a living to support their families. <br />Council discussion ensued. <br />• Councilmember David Benavides, noted City Council previously took action <br />to formally declare City of Santa Ana a sanctuary city as a direct response to <br />anti -immigrant rhetoric being spread by candidate Trump. Opined many in <br />the community are fearful of threats and charges made by President Trump, <br />in order for a community to be safe there needs to be strong police and <br />community relationship, and deputizing local law enforcement to do the work <br />of the federal government breaks down the trust of the immigrant community. <br />Directed staff to prepare amicus brief and document outlining answers to <br />basic questions. <br />• Councilmember Sal Tinajero, noted when Donald Trump was elected City <br />Council did not hesitate, when the federal government asks a city for <br />information regarding a person who has been arrested they must comply, <br />and City of Santa Ana is in compliance with federal law. Opined community <br />becomes afraid to call police if city does not work with them, effort to inform <br />community that police officers are here to protect them and not go against <br />them, and continued efforts to build strong relationship with community. <br />• Councilmember Vicente Sarmiento, opined City Council is following the law <br />and need to file amicus brief to support State of California against federal <br />action against California.
