REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />MAY 15, 2018 <br />TITLE: <br />RECOGNIZE RECEIPT OF COUNTY <br />OF ORANGE PROP 69 FUNDS FOR <br />REPLACEMENT OF THE POLICE <br />DEPARTMENT'S EVIDENCE <br />FREEZERIREFRIGERATOR <br />{STRATEGIC PLAN NO. 1, 1} <br />r <br />r <br />CI MANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />t•344WI-1*0 :IA's <br />APPROVED <br />❑ As Recommended <br />❑ As Amended <br />❑ Ordinance on 151 Reading <br />❑ Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />❑ Implementing Resolution <br />❑ Set Public Hearing For <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Recognize receipt of $100,000 in County of Orange Prop 69 grant revenue in the Police Special <br />Revenue Fund. <br />DISCUSSION <br />In November 2004, California voters passed Proposition 69 DNA Fingerprint, Unsolved Crime <br />and Innocence Protection Act of 2004 to expand and modify state law regarding the collection <br />and use of criminal offender DNA samples and palm print impressions. On December 15, 2017 <br />the County Prop 69 Committee approved the allocation of 2017 DNA Identification Fund <br />revenues and estimated funding totaling $675,000. The Committee voted to allocate $619,132 <br />county -wide in one-time funding requests to enhance the DNA program for local law enforcing <br />entities and County Departments and set aside $55,868 for future funding requests. Santa Ana <br />PD was awarded $100,000 of the $619,132 awards to replace the refrigerator/freezer unit in the <br />Police Department's Evidence Section. The County Board of Supervisors approved Prop 69 <br />Committee's recommendations at their February 6, 2018 meeting. <br />The existing refrigerator/freezer unit is 20 years old and has reached the end of its useful life. <br />Specifications for the new unit are currently being developed, and once the bid process has been <br />completed, staff will seek Council approval of the award of contract. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT <br />Approval of this item assists the City in meeting Goal #1 — Community Safety, Objective #1 <br />(Modernize the Community Policing philosophy ko improve customer service, crime prevention <br />and traffic/pedestrian/bicycle safety) <br />21A-1 <br />
