City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 4Background City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 5Historical Perspective• There are approximately 106,246veterans in Orange County—approximately 4.3 percentof the adult population.• Orange County has a long history of military presence in its communities:– 725 Civil War veterans interred in nine local cemeteries (including Santa Ana)– Orange County was home to both the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and the Santa Ana Army Air Base City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 6Heroes Hall• To celebrate the legacy of Orange County veterans, in 2016 Orange County government officials established Heroes Hall:– Permanent, year-round museum and education center with exhibitions, performances and educational programs that celebrate the legacy of Orange County veterans and others who have served in the U.S. military– Free admission City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 7Options City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 8Incorporate Military Recognition into the Design of the Orange County Civic Center• The Orange County Civic Center occupies approximately 75 acres of space in Downtown Santa Ana• Advocate for design elements for the Civic Center that incorporate military recognition:– Physical enhancements:• Establish statues, monuments, memorial spaces (walks, plazas, fountains, walls, etc.) plaques, and other art installations• Rename park/open space and facilities with a military hero’s name City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 9Establish a Veterans Museum• Explore the feasibility of establishing a veterans museum. City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 10Deploy a Street Banner Program• Cities across the United States utilize their street light and utility poles to display commemorative banners to recognize their residents who have served in the U.S. military. • To implement these types of programs, it is common that the custom street banners display the name, branch, and year that the individual served, and are placed along main roads throughout the cities. • Utilize its existing street light/utility pole banner program as a framework to implement this option. City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 11Highlight Stories of Military Veterans in City-Issued Printed Materials• Use space in printed materials to highlight stories of U.S. military veterans in newsletters, inserts into utility bills, activity guides, and more. • Include a headshot, name of the individual, branch that they served, as well as the years served. City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 12Launch a Digital and Social Media Campaign to Tell Veterans’ Stories• Launch a digital and social media campaign by using digital tools such as the City’s website, electronic billboards and displays, and City social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Nextdoor).• Create content that recognizes veterans by including their name and accompanying biography. City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 13Reimagine Military Recognition at the Fourth of July Celebration• Annual Fourth of July celebration at Centennial Park• Reimagine recognition:– Formal ceremony– Parade– Other activities which focus on veterans City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 14Partner with Veterans-Related Organizations to Support their Existing Programs and Services• There are several veterans-related organizations throughout Santa Ana and surrounding Orange County that provide networking and other services for U.S. military veterans:• Air Force 2 Workforce• American Legion• County of Orange’s Veterans Service Office• OC Veterans Advisory Council• Santa Ana College’s Veterans Resource Center• Santa Ana Public Library’s Veterans Resource Center• State of California Department of Veterans Affairs• State of California• Employment Development Department• Santa Ana WORK Center• United Mexican American Veterans Association• U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs• Veterans Legal Institute• Veterans of Foreign Ward (VFW)• VetNet-Working WardrobesNote: This is not meant to be an exhaustive list. City Manager’s Office65A: Military Recognition OptionsJuly 21, 2020Slide 15Support Veterans Day Events• Taking into consideration COVID-19 public health requirements and related guidance, provide monetary or in-kind support to events and programs hosted by veterans-related organizations:– Meet-and-greet networking events– Professional development activities– Performances– Trainings–More• The Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (SARTC) could be used as a venue to host such events.
