Subject: Item 19D – NUISANCE ABATEMENT ACTIONS AGAINST OWNERS
The fact that this is an agenda item will be encouraging to many residents throughout the City. I am
personally aware of some of the issues that are associated with the Red Roof Inn. I see it every time I walk
from our neighborhood to Polly’s Pie or when we do a Santiago Creek cleanup. Red Roof Inn mattresses are
being used as shelters in the creek, and anyone that reads reviews of the Inn will know not to have their
relatives stay there. Drug transactions, SAPD service calls (369 since Jan. ‘19) and transient activity make it an
undesirable location to visit. This at the “Gateway To Santa Ana”. My hats off to Polly’s Pie. It’s a testament
to Polly’s quality and commitment to Santa Ana.
Longstanding violations need to be fixed. Red Roof Inn doesn’t care about the community, nor does it seem to
mind the bad press. For too long now the City has ignored these establishments.
Correcting long standing problems that are known to the community is a step in the right direction. Don’t let
the owners off with a promise to fix the issue. Make them accountable or legally seize the property.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. Stay safe, stay healthy.
Respectfully,
Dale A Helvig

Subject:Agenda 19D: Red Roof Inn
Santa Ana Council (cc Mr. Alexander and Mr. Hall with Red Roof Inn corporate)…I live not too far from the Red Roof Inn
on Main Street. As you likely know, this motel seems to be contributing to a substantial number of issues in the area
resulting in excess police resources being expended in the area. Additionally, it does not appear that the premises is
wholly up to code and livable standards. I urge you to proceed with nuisance abatement proceedings against the
owners in the hopes that they clean up their property and the issues surrounding it. I also urge you to clarify the use of
the property. It is my understanding that a fair share of the property may be used by state parolee housing after they
are released by the CA Dept of Corrections…I believe that it would be helpful to our community if this was clarified for us
all in order to reduce rumors. As always, I also urge you to continue to work with various groups in providing livable
housing solutions to those who are struggling and needing a place to stay and the mental health, physical health, job
training, life skills and addiction services that generally accompany such housing (i.e. permanent supportive
housing). Ultimately, I wish that the city did not need to go down this route and I have to presume that there have been
numerous attempts to mitigate these issues with the business owner. BTW, I would send this email to the owners of the
property, who I believe are local to Orange County, but unfortunately I cannot find an email address although they are
right across the street from the Red Roof Inn, so I imagine that they are aware of the situation.
Blessings to you all as you continue to improve our community.
Best,
Tim Johnson

Subject:Red Roof Inn
The property has been in constant decline for years. In the late 90’s my parents would stay there as it was nice. Now it’s
covered in filth, crime, and code violations. Neighboring restaurants and businesses have seen a huge uptick in crime
and the nearby park and homes are susceptible to the criminals frequenting this area.
Please look to hold the owners responsible for the maintenance and safety of their property.
If the hotel is being used to house recently released inmates, there needs to be adequate security and oversight.
This hotel as well as the immediate area has been ignored too long and crime has grown exponentially.
It’s time for our leaders to focus on the “broken windows” in our city to clean up the filth, crime, drug use, etc., that is
plaguing our city. It’s not enough to move people along and allow businesses to allow properties to deteriorate, people
who are homeless leave trash and hazardous waste on our streets and sidewalks, and allow criminal activity to
proliferate in the name of being empathetic to those who may be homeless, have mental disabilities, or who are drug
users. We have programs, shelters, and organizations, ready and willing to help. I don’t understand the logic of letting
someone live unsafely on the streets rather than insist they enter a program or location for assistance and a hand up.
Thank you for your time.
Thank you!

Subject:Agenda item 19D - Red Roof Inn
I am a resident of Park Santiago and live in close proximity to the Red Roof Inn. I have witnessed the decline of the
property over the last 5 years or so. I have also enjoyed frequenting the Polly’s Pies which is adjacent to the property
and have personally witnessed the effect to their business that
the abundance of illegal activity generating from the residents of the Red Roof Inn has brought to their doorstep.
The inn seems to be quite large and the volume of folks housed there that may not be on the up and up creates a
problem for the natural landscape of Santiago Park and the creek bed. Hundreds of folks can be in the brush and
hidden from sight for months at a time. The only way to even come close to finding them all is to send in the mounted
police. To have this population housed near a hidden flammable area is a recipe for disaster.
Let’s also not forget that a man was killed at the park entrance by homeless living in the 2525 building. The terrain
attracts an unsavory population and the residents at the Red Roof Inn only feed the population. To have this housing
adjacent to a park and the discovery science center with children present is unacceptable for our city to condone and
allow.
Please exercise every method you have to stop this!
