Why now? SCE is requesting a 14.4% increase in residential rates for 2021. A CCE is the only significant tool our city has to protect residents from these increases. A recent study by the City of Irvine concluded that CCE customers would save .5 to 2% off SCE’s comparable rates, with higher savings predicted over time. It will generate income we can use for local programs like stabilizing our electricity bills, bike lanes or EV chargers. All good, green things you know are good for the city’s desirability and carbon footprint. Best of all - for our kid’s future: The Irvine study also found that their CCE will enable that city to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035 at no additional cost to customers, while reducing emissions by 360,000 metric tons each year. That's like taking more than 78,000 cars off the road. Environmental benefits would be comparable for Santa Ana. Please, our Club’s Santa Ana members urge you to vote to move forward on CCE this month in order to meet a year-end California Public Utilities Commission deadline that must be met in order to begin service in 2022. If this council misses this deadline, Santa Ana residents cannot get CCE until 2023. Do not delay the vote on being part of the Community Choice Energy Authority now forming in OC. It’s the right action and the right time. Irvine's City Council has unanimously voted to create a CCE Joint Powers Authority after multiple recommendations from their Green Ribbon Committee and Finance Commission agreed with their study, which found that CCE will bring the city $10.6 million in annual net revenue, $7.7 million in annual savings for Irvine consumers, and $120,000 in annual municipal electricity savings. I support this program, because it will save customers money, brings revenue to our community by keeping our rate payer dollars in Santa Ana, and allow us to convert to renewable energy faster and improve our community. This is a historic moment for Santa Ana is becomes a Clean Energy Leader and Founding Member. Please schedule a special session before December 31, 2020, to vote on joining the OC Power Authority and appointing a board member. Cities that join by Dec 31st can start implementing in 2021, instead of waiting until 2022 or 2023, so it's important that you meet this deadline. If Santa Ana, Lake Forest, and Buena Park joins, the program would generate $92 million per year in revenue by 2031. This money can be used for COVID relief as so many cities are doing now, EV charging stations, subsidies for EV vehicles, green public transportation-- all sorts of programs to green OC. Dear Mayor and Council Members, I want to wish you congratulations on your appointment to offices in Santa Ana. I was pleased to see a positive outcome of my vote and a transition to more progressive leaders in our community! I’m writing you all this urgent message because as you know the City Council is delaying its decision to join Community Choice Energy JPA with Irvine. If it delays any longer, there will be no opportunity to join this program until 1-2 years from now. If we don’t act now, Santa Ana loses the opportunity as well as being a founding member, which would give us residents the relief we greatly need. CCE will build revenue and help our local economy recover from the pandemic. I believe it’s a wise decision to vote to enter, at no cost or harm to the city, since our city could withdraw without penalty early next year. I’m a young member of our community here in Santa Ana and I love my city. I advocate for the climate and unfortunately, the effects of climate change are here and developing rapidly. In addition, people aren’t prospering, just making ends meet. Joining CCE with Irvine can help us with both of these issues. In the best interests of the welfare of our community, I ask that you please add the vote for CCE to the next city council meeting agenda. This would be meaningful for every resident of Santa Ana and inspire other cities to join us. After all City of Irvine, City of Fullerton and City of Huntington Beach are moving forward with it and that is reason enough for city of Santa Ana to join forces and make a positive impact to put clean energy and the health of their residents first. We do not have time to delay to act on our climate crisis and community choice energy can get us where we need to be to ensure a more sustainable long-term future in our Orange County area for years to come. You are morally obligated as publicly elected officials to do the right thing and to represent the will of the people and community choice energy needs to be a priority for the City of Santa Ana. So I urge you to please do the right thing and support joining the CCA with cities of Irvine Fullerton and Huntington Beach for community choice energy. 1
