Key Points
•Genetic variants of COVID-19 have been emerging and
spreading around the world throughout the COVID-19
pandemic.
•These variants in the United States are routinely monitored
through sequence-based surveillance, laboratory studies, and
epidemiological studies.
•A U.S government group developed a Variant Classification
scheme that categorizes the variants into three classes:
–Variant of Interest
–Variant of Concern
–Variant of High Consequence

The Variants
•Currently in the United States, there are four notable variants:
–B.1.1.7 (Alpha): This variant was first detected in the United States
in December 2020. It was initially detected in the United Kingdom.
–B.1.351 (Beta): This variant was first detected in the United States
at the end of January 2021. It was initially detected in South Africa
in December 2020.
–P.1 (Gamma): This variant was first detected in the United States in
January 2021. P.1 was initially identified in travelers from Brazil,
who were tested during routine screening at an airport in Japan, in
early January.
–B.1.617.2 (Delta): This variant was first detected in the United
States in March 2021.It was initially identified in India in
December 2020.

When to Wear a Face Covering if
You’re Vaccinated
•Face coverings are not required for fully vaccinated
people, except in the following settings:
–Public transit
–Hospitals
–Long-Term care facilities
–Homeless shelters, emergency shelters, and cooling
centers
–State and local correctional facilities and detention
centers
–Indoors in K-12 schools, childcare, and other youth
settings

When to Wear a Face Covering if You’re
Not Yet Vaccinated
•Face coverings are required for
unvaccinated individuals in indoor public
settings and businesses.
•Examples: retail, restaurants, theaters,
family entertainment centers, meetings,
state and local government offices serving
the public

Masks are Strongly Encouraged
•Generally, fully vaccinated people are not
required to wear face coverings.
•However, the City of Santa Ana strongly
encourages everyone, whether fully
vaccinated or not, to wear a face covering
indoors.
