Hello,
My name is Cristina Garcia Rea. I have been a resident of Santa Ana my entire life and I
was a teacher with the Santa Ana Unified School District for 28 years. As a teacher I saw
first hand the impact of social injustice. My students had to deal with asthma attacks,
missed school days and lack of open space among other things. Even when they played in
the school yard I worried that there might be lead in the soil and yet their neighborhood in
the Pico-Lowell area of the city has received very little or no outreach in the adoption of the
General Plan, (and having worked in this community I can say that a mass mailing
from the city is NOT real outreach). City Council, you must delay the adoption of the
General Plan until you have engaged all our communities and have heard our input. We
need a plan that gives us concrete numbers and statistics about the state of social justice
problems in our city and an actual action plan on how and when these issues will be
addressed and mitigated.
Remember, you are our representatives. We trusted you to do what is best for our children
and ourselves. Is that what you are doing by denying us a voice in when the general plan
will be adopted? Is that what you are doing by ignoring the social injustice issues so many
communities in Santa Ana have to deal with? Please delay the adoption of the General
Plan.
