Brandon Lopez was a son and a father whose life was lost in our city. It is very disturbing and horribly wrong that our police department allowed Anaheim Police to take control of the situation and ultimately allowed them to take the life of an armless individual experiencing a mental health crisis. How we treat those experiencing mental health crises reflects how we care about the most vulnerable residents in our city. Violence was not the answer, it was never the answer, especially not tormenting him in his final hours with an overwhelming amount of police. If we do not provide Brandon's family the justice they are seeking, then we will fail all residents who witnessed or heard about Brandon's wrongful murder within the jurisdiction of a police department that is supposed to protect us, not torment us. Brandon was our neighbor, our community member that should still be here today. Please provide Brandon's family the justice they seek; the Santa Ana police department MUST be held accountable for their complicity in the murder of Brandon Lopez. Do the right thing. I am generally in support of the police but there are too many things wrong with this killing. I have not seen any account that Brandon was armed or threatened the police. He did not listen to their commands for four hours but he did propose a threat to himself, police or the public. His family was not allowed to talk to him which could have ended the crisis without violence. Plus how does Anaheim PD take over control when he was in the city of Santa Ana? Why did the Anaheim PD shoot to kill and not to disable? Why used bullets instead of a stun gun? I truly believe Brandon's death was not necessary So what I would propose is that the City Council ask an independent agency, like the OCDA or NAACP to conduct a full investigation. Their report should then be shared with the Council, SAPD and citizens of Santa Ana. Carl Benninger President of Com-link 1829 W. Garry Ave, Santa Ana, 92704 1
