HomeMy WebLinkAboutCorrespondence- Non-Agenda cFsO RID.E.f'CO i October 17, 2022 To: Santa Ana City Council On behalf of the Sacramento Lowrider Commission (SLC) and in full support of the Orange County Car Club; we the SLC supports the repeal of the NO Cruising Ordinance in its entirety. The No Cruising ordinance was enacted as a means to control cruising. The ordinance, targets minority individuals who own low-profile vehicles, known as "low riders." The ordinance profiles and stigmatizes low riders as criminals for owning and driving their vehicles. If the county's concern is traffic control, there are several existing, non-race preferential and more practical state vehicle codes to address traffic control. Such as Section California Vehicle Code 22526(a)prohibits blocking of an intersection because a vehicle did not make it through before a light changed to red. Lowriders are not"sideshows." We do not spin out, violently perform donuts, burn-out our tires and endanger the sightseeing public. We are low and slow! Lowriders have publicized the No Cruising ordinance as an application of the inequities and racial profiling of a car culture that is family oriented and in itself an expression of the vehicle owner's art canvas on wheels. The No Cruising ordinance only relevance is to openly and publicly support racial profiling of the car owner and car culture that is family friendly and civic minded. The low rider community voluntarily contributes to the civil duties and economic recovery of the County as we organize food, toy, water, clothing, and school supply drives. Lowriders contribute to feed the unhoused, bring prosperity to businesses and contribute to existing non-profit organizations through fundraisers and participating in parades and social service organizations. Moving forward, stop the oppression on cruising and repeal the No Cruising ordinance. Embrace lowriders for what they are -- Art on wheels. Cruising is not a crime. for Francine Mata, President Sacramento Lowrider Commission Sacramentolowridercomm@gmail.com F 0 •r low rice r d A N To: Santa Anna City Council I want to start by thanking you for addressing the concerns of the Lowrider community. The lowrider community has and will continue to work with our local nonprofits and police, city leaders, parks, and many businesses associations across California. We have seen what unity and cohesiveness can do when we come together for a great cause like Lowriding and cruising. We have seen Sacramento and San Jose remove there No Cruising Ordinances and repeal them. The racist bias creation of these ordinances was to divide and separate our diverse communities. We can no longer continue to stand by and not voice our grievances about this matter. We the California Lowrider Alliance that consists of the leadership and councils of San Francisco, National City, Modesto, San Jose, Santa Ana, San Ferando Valley, Fairfield, Compton, Santa Rosa, Inland Empire, Bakersfield, South Central, Orange County and Sacramento. We ask you to move forward to remove your no cruising ordinance and repeal it from your charter. We thank you for your consideration and time on this important matter.
