Dear Chair Pham and Santa Ana Planning Commissioners,
My name is Kathryn Levassiur. I am a Huntington Beach resident and speak on behalf of Huntington
Beach Short Term Rental Alliance and Orange County CA Airbnb Community Facebook group
members in support for a fair STR framework in Santa Ana.
On a personal note, I have lived in OC since 1959 and in Huntington Beach since 1999. I have hosted
short term stays in my HB home since 2015. For me, it began with the request of my son, to “retire
early” so I could babysit my newborn grandson. The need to earn money to make up for the lost
income from my job prompted me to host spare rooms in my home. Today, my home is so much
more relevant and versatile to my husband and I. We do shorter stays and stay in a small attached
apartment when we’re in Huntington Beach and host stays of 31+ nights when we’re out of town.
Our STR guests pay lodging tax for the privilege of staying in HB, and often dine and shop at
neighborhood businesses based on my recommendations.
There might be comments that a search of Santa Ana CA on airbnb.com might produce many
hundreds of STRs in Santa Ana, but if you look at the listings, you’ll see neighboring cities as you
scroll down the list. I invite you to look at some of the top listings, their photos and read their
reviews from the happy guests visiting Santa Ana. Successful STRs are usually the best maintained
homes on a neighborhood block.
We all want to peacefully enjoy our homes and neighborhoods and have our property rights
respected. We support fair STR regulations, collection and remittance of transient occupancy taxes
from our STR guests and a robust enforcement of the city’s municipal codes for all residents. STRs
support local businesses, add vitality to neighborhoods and to the City of Santa Ana. Please fairly
regulate STRs in Santa Ana.
