Even though it is a few moons down the road we need to throw our support "to keep the course" now. In the meantime I was asked by Steven Hart and Maggie to help send our suppot in writing to the City Council. With a ittle help I composed a 1st writing and the content hit all the bullet points on the head but was too long. I got an expert opinion and review by a professional reader of manuscripts that I met through Church. He helped me re-write the original and the below copy is the what we will be submitting to the City Council. As YOU are part of the membership or a FRIEND OF GOLF that is mentioned in the contained document please feel free to add your name and any additional comments to the below document. Please send to: www.santa-ana.org/contact-the-city-council If you like to send a copy to individual city councel members, there addresses may be found at: www.santa-ana.org/city-council-members Please join me in supporting the NON-CLOSURE OF the River View Golf Course. N Paulie out ? 2 Closure of the River View Golf Course As a Retired USAF Vietnam Era Veteran I will be denied playing golf at the River View Golf Course if it’s lease is not renewed. Along with the other 74 members of the River View Senior Golf Club, the majority of which are also Veterans they, too, will be denied the ability to continue to golf at River View. The River View Golf Course attracts an abundance of players of all ages. This is evidenced by all the players that utilize the course, driving range and practice putting greens and chipping areas daily throughout the year. The Senior Club, which I am a member of, consists of 75 members and golfs there twice weekly. We have players that drive from cities as far south as Carlsbad, Mission Viejo, Huntington Beach, Irvine, and Fountain Valley. Along with surrounding areas such as Santa Ana, Anaheim, Fullerton, Yorba LInda, Villa Park, Buena Park, etc. this course is ideal as it is centrally located. No matter whether the Winter or Summer months are in season the Course is always busy as you will find many students and young players receiving lessons on putting, chipping and driving. The Creek that runs through the middle of the course is home to many birds, small mammals and animals. This is one of the most picturesque courses as well as challenging. For many of the Veterans, Friends of Veterans, Seniors, Grade School Children, High School Students and regular voting residents this golf course offers amenities that are the most affordable anywhere in Southern California. It is the only golf course in the area that is affordable to all, is centrally located and a gem to golf on. The atmosphere and friendly service the course offers is professional and friendly. You do not feel unwelcome or trivial. All the personnel is friendly and makes you feel welcomed. During our rounds you can experience not only seasonal ducks, coots and geese but also parrots, hawks and all kinds of different species of birds that nest in the trees surrounding the course. During early seasonal springtime we have seen tadpoles and small frogs make there way across wet greens and fairways. In the summertime when the creek remains dry it becomes a sanctuary for small sandpipers, reptiles and small mammals. Coyotes can be spotted on the course occasionally looking for a meal. This course always remains busy whether Winter or Summer and we invite you to join us in a round or two anytime so that you can experience what we experience twice a week, all year round. Please consider not closing this Golf Course that attracts Thousands yearly vs. a Park that will be used by far less. Please feel free to add your own email supporting the nonclosure of the River View Golf Course. The below email was reviewed by your Board, Steve and Maggie along with my legal advisor. See you all tomorrow. P out ? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Dear Santa Ana City Council, My name is Paul (Paulie) Dominguez and I am the Lead Chairman of a 5 Member Board that oversees the River View Senior Golf Club. I am writing to you with the hopes you will re-think and overturn your decision to not renew the lease that would terminate the River View Golf Course and replace it with a park. We are a Club that has both Male and Female members and are in effect a Senior Golf Club. This club was started over 20 years ago. When I joined there were only about 25 members. During the Covid outbreak I was asked to help oversee the Club. My Background included being an Events Coordinator in the Air Force during the Vietnam War Era for the 6910th Security Group, Delta Flight which consisted of over 250 Airman and families. On my retirement I went to work for Underwriters Laboratories as a Safety Engineer/Inspector and again was an Events Coordinator for our Southern Calif. Section of Inspection/Engineering Centers. During this time I became involved with a Retired Veterans Racquet Ball Group, The Rao 3cquet Pals and conducted activities for them for close to 20 years. This than led me to join the River View Golf Course Senior Men's Club. During the Covid era we updated the Clubs Charter and By Laws and opened the Club to include Women as well as Men. I am also a Member of the San Juan Capistrano American Legion and a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus in good standing. At present we have over 70 paid members and host an Annual Tournament that attracts players/friends/relatives from Arizona, Texas, Oregon, Northern Calif., L.A., Orange and San Diego Counties. In the three years since covid our membership has and continues to grow. Despite our growth River View Golf Course continues to welcome us with open arms and accommodate our golfing needs. The Majority of Members that have joined since Covid began are Veterans and friends of Veterans. We play twice a week and have members drive in from South County (Carlsbad, Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine), Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, Anaheim, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, and, of course, Santa Ana twice a week. We are a group of over the hill good ole boys and girls that Love the game of Golf, Love to Laugh, Love to bust your chops and River View allows all of us to enjoy in that atmosphere weekly throughout the year. The major Challenge of this course, despite it's length, is the up and down location of its Holes. The course personnel that keep the course in excellent shape makes River View a gem to golf on. For many of the Veterans and Seniors this Course is one of the few remaining courses that is affordable, centrally located and offers all the amenities a Country Club offers but without the unaffordable rates of a country club, at least for retired Seniors and your regular working class heros whom are also your voting contingency. The atmosphere and friendly service the course offers is professional and friendly. You do not feel unwelcome or trivial. All the personnel is friendly and makes you feel welcomed. 2 Again, the attraction of the River View Golf Course are it's location, Senior Rate (which cannot be beat by any other course in L. A., San Diego or Orange Counties) the challenge of the course itself and all the amenities a course can offer. River View is a beautiful and picturesque course whether it be in the Summer or Winter. It's location is very deceiving but it is not a buried treasure as it is always busy with a Driving Range that is constantly busy, booked tee times and the most emaculate putting practice greens one could hope for. They are definitely some of the best greens anywhere in Southern California. The River Bed that runs through the course is not only challenging for golfers when it is running with water in the winter from rains and melted snowpack; but it is also an evniornmental sanctuary for fowl such as ducks, coots and geese. In the summer time when the river bed becomes dry it becomes a sanctuary for small reptiles, sandpipers and mammals. For these reasons golfers do not hit out of the river bed during hot summer months. During our rounds you can experience not only seasonal ducks, coots and geese but parrots, hawks and all kinds of different species of birds that nest in the trees surrounding the course. Coyotes whom frequent the course for a morsal or two are also visiters on the course. During early sessonal springtime we have seen tadpoles and small frogs make there way across, wet greens and fairways. During the Summer time the Golf Course becomes increasingly busy as they host all types of teaching classes for young students and introductory classes for all ages. Groups of grade school students make their way to the driving range, putting green, and chipping areas for lessons all during the summer. This course remains busy all the time. Even though I remain bias I cannot see any redeeming value of a park where the Course now lays. We, obviously, view this as nothing more than a Contractors wish of uprooting a course that is used by thousands for a Park that may only be used by few. I invite you and any golfers to join our club and experience what this course has to offer for yourselves. Thank You, Paul (Paulie) R. Use caution when opening attachments or links. Mayor and Council…I am wri?ng you to bring up a very important item. We are currently missing 3 members of the Measure X Ci?zen Oversight Commi?ee- granted one or maybe two of those members are recent vacancies, that is the reality right now. With only 4 members we are at constant peril of not having a quorum for a mee?ng whether it be for a planned absence or more likely a last minute emergency or illness. For those who have not appointed someone, I urge you to do so quickly. Our next mee?ng will be approaching in September and hoping we can get these seats filled before then. I know each of you care deeply for our city. I also know that it can be hard to find folks for some of these commi?ees. If you know anyone that wants to speak with me to find out what it is like, I am more than happy to dialogue with them. Too many folks think that they have to be a finance expert and such…when in fact it is more important to care about our city, its residents, and businesses. Thanks for listening and let me know if there is anything I can do to help fill these vacancies.
